A funeral service was con- ducted Tuesday, May 23 for Kern River Valley pioneer storekeeper and postmaster August Otto "Gus" Suhre of Wofford Heights. Officiating at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella was retired Reverend Alton Thomas former pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kern- ville. Pallbears were Jeffrey Waldrop, Kurt Waldrop, Robert Meadows, Michael Sherlock, Earl Richardson, Jay Burns, honorary pallbearers were Bob Powers, Robert Merriam, Dave Kitchen and Charles Horton. Gus passed away May 17 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He is sur- vived by his wife of 58 years Ger- trude of Wofford Heights; daughters, Phyllis "P.J." Sherlock of Wofford Heights, Elizabeth Waldrop of Lake Isabella; brother Leonard Suhre of Coos Bay, Oregon; five grand children and nine great grandchildren.
Gus was community minded and was the founding member of many valley service organiz- ations. He was charter com- mander of the American Veterans of WWI barracks 1841. commander of KRV Post 7665, commander of American Legion post 711, member of the 0dd- fellows lodge 251, since 1922, serv- ed as a deputy sheriff under Cecil Pascoe and a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge 365 and charter organizer of the Chamber of Commerce and Historical Society.

Monsignor Anthony Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church of Wof- ford Heights. Mr. Boland passed away May 14 at the Memorial Hospital of Greater Bakersfield. He is survived by his wife Esther of Kernville; step- daughters Louise and husband Steve Campbell of Ridgecrest; Karen and husband Ernie Shatswell of Bakersfield; sisters Blanche Pendergrast of Col- orado, Bernadette Britell of Washington, D.C. Dorothy Walsh of Washington, D.C .; 8 grand children and 16 great grandchildren. Andy is preceded in death by two brothers Elmer and Francis Boland.
Andy Boland was a resident of the Kern Valley for 26 years. For 17 years, he had served as manager of the Kernville Domestic Water Co.

W.L. "Dub" Williford
A funeral service was con- ducted Tuesday, May 30 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Dub Williford of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. John Davis, Pastor of the Assembly of God church Wofford Heights. Mr. Williford passed away May 25 at Kern Valley Hospital.
He is preceded In death by his son Bill deceased in 1978 and sur- vived by his wife Marie of Lake Isabella; son Wayne Lee Williford of Lake Isabella; brother Bob Hoyer of Lake Isabella; grandsons Wayne Jr. and Mark. Dub Williford served with the Merchant Marine during WW II. He was a member of the teamsters union and a member of the Assembly of God church of Wofford Helghts.
Born Feb. 9, 1915 in Sherman, Texas, W.L. Dub Williford was 74.

RUEL DOUGLAS SOWARD
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 7 at 4 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Ruel Douglas Soward who passed away at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield on June 2. Mr. Soward was born Sept. 16, 1911 in Ada, Oklahoma and resided in California since 1942. He was a retired carpenter. He and his wife, Edyth, founded and built the Lake Isabella Horseshoe courts and club in 1985, as association with the National Horseshoe Assoc. He served as presi- dent of the club for five years. He was also a member of the CB Sideband Club and known as Grasshopper. He was an avid fisherman and sportsman.
Survivors include his wife of near- ly 58 years, Edyth; daughter Cheryl Pederson of Sequim, WA; son Charles; 6 grandchildren 8 grand children and J. great-grandchild. sisters Viola Dew and Beatrice Ellis of Ada, Oklahoma and Billie Ruth Harr of Bakersfield.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 961 East Main Street, Ventura, CA. Funds will be used in Kern County.

A memorial service will be held June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Moose Lodge in Lake Isabella for Dorothy Marie Koontz of Weldon. Officiating will be the officers of the Moose Lodge. She is survived by her husband John of Weldon; son Nick Stoycu of Bodfish, son John H. Koontz of Hun- tington Beach; daughter Nadine of Texas, brother in law Harold Swartz of Weldon; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was senior regent of the Women of the Moose No. 1297.
Mrs Koontz was born Dec. 4, 1916 in Illinois and died May 30 in Weldon. She was 72 years old and a 12 year resident of the Kern Valley.

A funeral service was held Friday June 2 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Mt. Mesa for Olee Roy Combs of Bodfish. Officiating was Don Rains of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Pauline of Bodfish; sons Robert Combs of Long Beach, Jim Combs of Manhattan Beach; daughters Joann Krowel of Riverside, Connie Brown of Riverside, sister Hattie Wiggins of Oxnard, Doris Carrell of Santa Paula; 12 grand children and 9 great grandchildren. Mr. Combs was born June 26, 1916 in Oklahoma and died May 31 in Bakersfield. He was 72 years old and a 19 year resident of the Kern Valley. Interment followed the service at the Kern Valley cemetery. Mr. Simons is survived by his wife of 42 years Maxine of Bodfish; son John Simons of Mesa, AZ. Robert Stevens of Utah; daughters Janet Miller of Norwalk, Judy Sigler of Pennsylvania; sisters Lucile Farn- sworth of Norwalk, Ruby Andre of Yukaipa; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Ralph Vanlandingham, known as Jackrabbit to his many C.B. friends passed away June 17 at the VA medical center. He was born Sept. 6, 1920 in Athena, Texas.
He served in the U.S. Navy from June, 1940 to June 1946 Aboard the USS Boise until.it was disabled in battle.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth and son, Gene of Weldon; brother J. D. Vanlandingham of San Diego; three sisters, Ellinor Hatley of Texas, Opal Goss of Oklahoma and Alma Haseltine of Montana.

Mr. Davis was supervisor for the American Forest Products in Johnsondale. Born April 7, 1920 in Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas, Haskell Omega Davis was 69.

Erwin Mackey
Erwin Mackey of Wofford Heights passed away June 9 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.
He is survived by his wife Helen of Wofford Heights and son Jack of Hawthorne.
Mr. Mackey was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard who served aboard merchant ships. In January, 1943, he sur- vived the torpedo attack on the USS Samuel Gomphers, a freighter on which he was serving.

William Edward Gettig of Onyx passed away July 1 at the Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa. He is survived by his wife Donna of Onyx; sons Mark of Lake Isabella, Bill, Jr. of Lake Isabella; daughters Cathi Kline of Lake Isabella, Bonnie Gettig of Lake Isabella; brother Al Gettig of California; Robert Gettig of Michigan, Cliff and John Carlson also of Michigan; six grandchildren.
Bill Gettig was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps who served as an aerial gunner in combat in the Skies above Germany, France and the Balkans. He returned with an air medal and eight bronze battle stars at the time he was 18 years of age.

Waldo Ellis was a native of Kern County, having been born in Glenville in 1908. He served 38 years with the Kern County Road District 1 as an equipment operator and foreman on road building and repair projects In Kern County. He was a member of the Kernville Methodist Church.

tana; sisters Pearl Parker of Montana, Lynn Poore of Montana
and two grandsons. William Chose was a WWII
veteran of military service. Born

Cemetery for Alice L. Pitcher of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Dr. Jerry Corbaley, pastor of the Mt. view Southern Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.
Mrs. Pitcher passed away sud- denly while vacationing near Crescent City, CA. She is survived by her husband Harland Pitcher of Lake Isabella; son Harland Dr. Pit- cher of Everett, Washington; father and mother in law, Mandel
and Melba Pitcher of Lake Isabella; sister Helen of Grants Pass, Oregon; 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Born July 14, 1921 in New York state, Alice Lucille Pitcher was 67.

FRANCES LIGGETT
A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern River Valley Cemetery on Friday, July 21 for Frances M. Liggett of Bakersfield, formerly of Wofford Heights. Of- ficiating was Dr. Jerry Corbaley, Pastor of the Mt. View Southern Bap- tist Church of Lake Isabella. Mrs. Liggett passed away July 17 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.
She is preceded in death by her hus- band Wellington D. Liggett deceased Dec. 1, 1972 and survived by her son Mel Liggett of Redondo Beach; daughter and son in law Maxine and Nick Meyers of Bakersfield; daughter Maureen Herrington of Redondo Beach; sisters Jerry Bybee of Hawthorne, Dorothy Fallon of Canyon Country; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Liggett had been a volunteer worker for the KRV Chapter of the American Cancer Society and had resided in the Kern Valley for nearly 20 years. Born Dec. 14, 1913 in Fort Leaven- worth, Kansas, Frances Margaret Liggett was 75. Interment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Teresa Ann Ulmer of Weldon passed away July 17 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. A memorial service for Teresa Ann was conducted at the Valley Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, July 20, Officiating was Dr. Jerry Corbaley, pastor of the Mt. View So. Baptist Church. She is survived by her mother Bar- bara; son Jeremy; sisters Lolean and Candice.
