Thomas Ring.


A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Kern Valley cemetery for Thomas Ring of Onyx. Officiating was Cliff Henderson. Mr. Ring passed away Jan. 17 in Scott- sdale, Arizona.


He is preceded in death by his wife Ruby deceased Aug. 19, 1983 and sur- vived by his daughter Fern Gimpel of Scottsdale; son Gene Ring of Clarkston, WA; brothers Wayne of Lemongrove, Jack of Redondo Beach; sister Darlene Bartlet and Bobbi Attenbury both of Kansas; sister Helen Schlabach of San An- tonio, Texas and 10 grandchildren.


Born March 15, 1917 in Kansas, Thomas Morgan Ring was 72. Ar- rangments by Valley .Mortuary.

Services were held Jan. 12 in In- glewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood for Lucille Chaffin who passed away on Jan. 6 in Weldon.


Lucille Chaffin was born on Feb. 12, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa. She and her husband of 49 years Le Roy Chaffin moved to Weldon 10 years ago after residing in Downey for 35 years.


She is survived by her husband LeRoy of Weldon; sons Lewis of Paramount, Larry of Hacienda Heights; daughters Lynn Streetz of Weldon, Cindy Rowles of Weldon; daughters in law Della Chaffin and Louise Chaffin, sons in law, Jim Streetz, and Alan Rowles; grand- children Michael, David, Jason; Shannon; brother George DeWald of Weldon; sisters Mary Stabile of San Dimas and Lela Barber of Clovis and numerous nieces and nephews.


Gilbert Kunster


Gilbert Kunster of Bodfish passed away Jan 24 in Lake Isabella. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Jen- nie of Bodfish; daughter Sandra of Bodfish; son Gilbert Jr., of Florida and two grandchildren.


Born Feb. 27, 1921 in Germany, Gilbert Kunster was 68. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Edna Parsley


Edna Parsley of Bodfish passed away at home on Jan. 23 following il- Iness. She is survived by her husband J.D. Parsley of Bodfish; daughter Rillis of Whittier. Mrs. Parsley had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 19 years.


Born Jan. 20, 1917 in Georgia, Ed- na Ruth Parsley was 73.

Russ Teeling


A memorial service will be con- ducted at the Kern River Elks Lodge on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. for Russ Teeling of Wofford Heights. Of- ficiating will be officers of the BPOE Elks No. 2358. Mr. Teeling passed away Jan. 26.


He is survived by his wife, Ellie, of Wofford Heights; daughter Charlene McNeil and his granddaughter Shan- non Sweeney of North Hollywood.


Russ Teeling had been a resident of Wofford Heights for six years.


Born Feb. 6, 1919 in Boston, Mass., Russell McCowan Teeling was 70. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Johnny Ray Casey


A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Johnny Casey of Weldon. Officiating was Rev. James Lee, pastor of the Valley Community Church of Lake Isabella. Mr. Casey passed away Jan. 23 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 36 years Charlene of Weldon; daughters Pat Eisenhower of Ridgecrest, Pam MacClean of Trona; sisters Norma Murphy of New Mexico; Rena Briggs of California and six grandchildren.


Johnny Casey was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Born Nov. 12, 1929 in Weletka, Oklahoma, Johnny Ray Casey was 60.

Infant Christopher Thompson


A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mt. Mesa for infant Christopher Thompson, one day old. Officiating was the LDS Ministry of the Kern Valley.


Christopher is survived by parents Gerald and Yvette; brothers Stephen, Sterling and Trent; grandmother Jeanette Petitt of Mt. Mesa and grandmother Patricia Thompson of California.

William "Blackie" Sutton


Graveside services were held for William "Blackie" Sutton, who died Dec. 17 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after a long illness.


Born in Long Lake, New York on May 30, 1916, Mr. Sutton was 73.


He is survived by his wife of 531/2 years Laura "Bobby" Sutton of Lake Isabella; two sons Larry Sutton of Cupertino, CA and Bill Sutton of Cor- onado, CA and one daughter Toni Kilbourne of Reseda. He is also sur- vived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.


He was a veteran of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Yom Kipper wars. He went to sea for 30 years and was Chief Engineer in the United States Merchant Marines.


After retiring, he worked as sta- tionary engineer for 11 years for Lockheed, in Burbank and finally retired to Lake Isabella in 1979.


Interment was held at the Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, CA. Officiating was Rev. David Rydbeck of Huntington Beach, a dear friend of the family.


Herbert W. Quam


Herbert W. Quam, 89, died at San Bernardino Community Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 14.


A native of Roland, Iowa, he was born on Aug. 7, 1900. He was a 65 year resident of California and for the past 30 years had lived in Kernville.


He is survived by his sister Cora A. Langland, also of Kernville, who was in San Bernardino at the time of his death.


His wife of 55 years, Betty, preced- ed him in death in 1983.


There will be no service. Interment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino.

Charles Westrope of Wofford Heights passed away Jan. 21 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Loretta of Wof- ford Heights; sister Scarlet Bailey of Arkansas. Mr. Westrope was retired after 30 years with Douglas Aircraft Co.


Born Oct. 3, 1907 in Iowa, Charles Franklin Westrope was 82.

Bill Strongman


A funeral service was conducted Friday, Jan. 26 at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for William E: "Bill" Strongman of Squirrel Valley. Officiating were of- ficers of KRV Moose Lodge No. 498 of Lake Isabella. Mr. Strongman pass- ed away Jan. 23 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He is preceded in death by his daughter Jacquelyn and survived by his wife Lorraine of Squirrel Valley, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.


Bill Strongman was a retired tool and die maker who operated his own shop in Los Angeles for many years before retiring to the Kern Valley in the late 1960's. His early training as a machinist included work for the Wabash railroad where he developed a lifelong love of steam locomotives.


Born April 11, 1908 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois, William Ed- ward Strongman was 81.

Charles Schuhmann


A graveside service was con- ducted Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the Kern Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Charles Schuhmann of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. John Revis, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernville. Mr. Schuhmann passed away Jan. 28 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife Ruth of Wofford Heights; son David Schuhmann and daughter in law Marilyn of Carson; brother Ray of Baja, California, Mexico; sister Vivian of Los Angeles; granddaughters Wendy of Lake Arrowhead; Kecia of Lakewood and Dorothy of Sacramento.


Charles W. Schuhmann was retired from Todd Pacific Shipyards and had worked for many years for the old Pacific Electric Railway, the famous "Red Cars". In the Kern Valley, where he had resided for the past 14 years, Schuhmann was a member of the Elks, Moose and the Douglas El Segun- do Rod and Gun Club.


Born June 15, 1916 in Los Angeles, Charles William Schuhmann was 73.

Serilda Emerson Thompson


Serilda Emerson Thompson was born Aug. 16, 1904 at the Emerson Ranch at Pattiway in Kern County and died Jan. 27 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Elbert Emerson and May Emerson. She had two older sisters and two younger brothers.


Serilda married Lawrence Thompson on Feb. 21, 1931, they had two children Margaret Ann (Thompson) Anderson of Bodfish and Lawrence Denzil Thompson, Jr. of Bakersfield.


Her husband preceded her in death in January, 1979.


Serilda was grandmother to Charlotte (Anderson) Andrews of Clovis, Steven Anderson of Fresno, Denis Myers and David Thompson of Bakersfield; great grandmother to Lisa and Christy Andrews of Clovis, Megan Ander- son of Fresno and Anthony and Lynette Myers of Bakersfield.


She was a resident of Bodfish for the past five years, living with her daughter Margaret Ander- son. She was a member of the Kern Valley Historical Society.


Graveside services were held Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Hillcrest Cemetery.


William A. Burke


Dr. William A. Burke of Squir- rel Valley passed away while on vacation at Grand Canyon on Dec. 24.


Burke served in WW II as a physician and retired as a Los Angeles County health officer.


He is survived by his friends Tom and Pat McMurray of Squir- rel Valley.


A funeral service was held at the Grand Canyon.


William Burke was born March 29, 1916 in Johnstown, PA.


Anyone wishing to may make a donation to the American Heart Association in Dr.Burke's name.


Charles H. Lorey


Charles Lorey passed away Friday, Jan. 26. He owned the Lorey Motel for 30 years.


He is survived by his mother in law Beatrice Coats; sister in law Eula Loftis; nephew Thomas Lof- tis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Lorey.


Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at the Roosevelt Memorial Park in Gardena.

Bill Nichols


A memorial service was con- ducted Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for William "Bill" Nichols of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Jess Wright a family friend. Mr. Nichols passed away Jan. 28 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife June of Lake Isabella; daughters Joann Polk of Lakeport, Shirley Jones of Lake Isabella; grand- sons Billy Smith of Wofford Heights, Johnny Smith of Kelseyville; grandaughters Sherry Oney of Lake Isabella; grandsons Bruce Jones of Lake Isabella, R.K. Polk of Lakeport

Bill Nichols was a member of KRV Moose Lodge No. 498 and a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 27 years. Born Nov. 18, 1927 in Newton County, Arkansas, William Nolan Nichols was 62.

Lucy Marie Kopachy


Services were held for Lucy Marie Kopachy, 61, of Weldon who died Feb. 1 at the Berryman Health West Convalescent Hospital in Whittier.


She was a customer service representative for Sears, Roebuck in Los Angeles.


A native of Follensbee, West Virginia, Mrs. Kopachy had been a resident of Weldon for five years.


She served as a Pink Lady at Whittier Presbyterian Intercom- munity Hospital, worked in the voting booths for many elections, enjoyed sewing and crafts.


She is survived by her husband Frank of Weldon; daughters Karen Crandall and her husband and daughter Ray and Jannel of Chino; son David Kopachy and daughter Kristina of Whittier; sisters Adeline Papp and Josephine Ike of Ohio; brothers Peter, Nick and Dan D'Amico of Ohio; brother in law and sister in law Louis and Evelyn Kopachy of Ohio, nieces and nephews.

Roy Ortiz


A memorial service was con- ducted Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Roy Ortiz of Weldon. Officating was Rev. Robbie Robinson, pastor of the -Kernville First Baptist Church. Mr. Ortiz passed away Jan. 29 at home following illness.


He is survived by his wife Nadine of Weldon; brother Ray- mond of Nebraska; sisters Rachel and Ruby both of Califor- nia; sisters Rita, Marie and Frances all of Nebraska; brother Marcus of Nebraska, sister Nan- cy of Connecticut and stepfather Pete Ortiz of Lincoln, Nebraska.


Roy Ortiz was a resident of the Kern Valley for the past seven years.


Born Nov. 28, 1923 in Lincoln, Nebraska, Roy Ortiz was 66 years of age.

Bert Curry


Services were held at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills on Feb. 8 for Bert Curry who died Feb. 5. Bert Curry was born Jan. 22, 1937. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, five brothers and sister.


He is survived by his sisters Wanda Smith, of Grass Lake, Michigan, Mattie Birkham of Palm Desert, Gladys Westbrooks, of Cliston, Ten- nessee, Mable Hart, of Adamsville, TN, and Helen Reading of Yorba Linda; step- daughters, Lauren Quicho of Bakersfield, Jennifer Yeoman of Burbank and Cincy of Canyon- Country; stepson Matt of Canyon Country and nine grandchildren.


Bert was a truck driver for many years and was an outgoing person who touched the lives of many. He was known to many as "Buffalo Bert" when he served as honorary Whiskey Flat Mayor in 1984.

Mary (Witt) Weaver


Services are pending for Mary (Witt) Weaver, 59, passed away in Caldwell, Idaho on Feb. 2.


The ninth child of a family of 10 children, Mary was born March 22, 1930 in Randsburg, CA. She at- tended school in Randsburg and Kelso Valley, then graduated in Bakersfield. She spent many hap- py years in Lake Isabella. Mary was an artist.


She is survived by her husband Del of Caldwell, Idaho; two daughters Mary Jane and Nellie Marie; sons Robert and Patrick Tice; and grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Tim Witt and Bob Witt; sisters Susan Milligan and Margaret Allison of the Kern Valley; brother Jim Witt of Sacramento, Hiram, Mike and Al Witt along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Brennan Correia Alves


Brennan Correla Alves passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Los Angeles on Feb. 18.


Born in San Francisco on Oct. 12 1965, Brennan spent his early childhood in Los Angeles, later mov- ing with his family to Kernville, where he graduated from Kern Valley High School. He moved to Bakersfield in 1984, working as a physical therapy aid and attended Bakersfield College. Originally intending to pursue a career in physical therapy, he chang- ed his major to business, earned his AA degree from Bakerfield College in 1989. He moved to Los Angeles in June, 1989, to attend Cal State Nor- thridge. He quickly became involved in campus activities and was proud to have written a winning grant proposal for the organization with which he was most closely aligned. In addition to his studies, he also worked part- time as a fundraiser for the Univer- sity. He had gained a love for travel, making two trips to Europe, most recently in January. Known for his devotion to working out and bike riding, his friends knew him as a per- son with unwavering dedication to his goals.


Brennan is survived by his mother and step father, Irene and Frank Webb, Valencia; his father Albert Correia, Van Nuys; brothers, Brian, Van Nuys, Bradley, Cour d'Alene, Idaho and Brett, Bakersfield and a host of friends in Bakersfield, Kern- ville, Los Angeles, San Francisco and abroad.


Internment was held at the Kern Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kern Valley United Methodist Missions. A memorial service was held at the Kernville Methodist Church on Satur- day, Feb. 24.


Albert Clark


Albert Clark of Lake Isabella died at home on Feb. 16. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Ruby of Lake Isabella.


Mr. Clark was retired from Autonetics and had resided in the Kern Valley for the past 20 years. Born Jan. 2, 1900 in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, Albert Leroy Clark was 90 years of age.

Lena Greer


Lena Greer of Weldon passed away at home on Feb. 13 following illness. She is preceded in death by her hus- band Philip deceased in 1972 and by son-in-law Harvey Hotchkiss deceas- ed in 1982.


Mrs. Greer is survived by her daughters Shirley Lewis and Ardene Hotchkiss both of Weldon; brother Paul Peterson of Traverse City, MI; grandchildren Rayleen Lewis, Bonnie Jean Lewis, Tony Lewis and Harvey Hotchkiss; great grandchildren Frankie, "Little Red", Jerry Jean, Glenn Jeffrey and Gregory Philip.


Lena Greer had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 18 years. Born Jan. 8, 1899 in Illinois, Lena Olive Greer was 91 years of age.


Interment of cremated remains in the Aledo Cemetery, Aledo, Mercer County, Illinois. Cremation ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.


Norman Taylor


A memorial service for Norman H. Taylor is pending at the Eagles Lodge. Mr. Taylor passed away Feb. 12 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 49 years Agnes of Southlake.


During WW II Norman Taylor serv- ed as a sergeant with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific.


Born Oct. 10, 1919 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, Norman Hale Taylor was 70.

Elizabeth Cooper


Internment for Elizabeth Cooper of Hemet wil be private. She had work- ed as a retail clerk for about 18 years at Von's in Pico Rivera.


A native of Victoria, Texas, Mrs Cooper died Friday at Kaiser Hospital in Riverside. She was 69 years old and lived in California for about 50 years, the last two years in Hemet and before that in Lake Isaella.


She was a member of Kern Valley Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and was retired from Retail Clerks Union 342.


Survivors iniude her husband, Eugene of Hemet; a son, Terry of Oceanside; two daughters Candy of Norwalk, Conn., and Lora of Corona; three grandsons and brothers and sisters in Texas and Connecticut.


Neptune Society of Riverside is directing.

An evening vigli service as con- ducted Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Anthony Futia of Southlake. Reciting prayers of the Rosary was Rev. Mon- signor Anthony G. Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church in Wofford Heights. Monsignor Herdegen also officiated at a graveside service on Wednesday a the Kern Valley Cemetery.


Mr. Futia passed away at home following illness on Feb. 11. He is sur- vived by his wife of 55 years, Frances of Southlake; son Anthony Futia of New York; daughter Virginia Spellman of Weldon; sisters Albertina Patla of New York, Elvira Gigante of New York; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


During WW II, Anthony Futia serv- ed with the U.S. Navy as a seaman aboard the USS Mt. Hood, the USS Talamnca, Born June 8, 1907 in White Plains, Westchester County, New York, Anthony Joseph Futia was 82


years of age.

Bessie De Foreest


A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern Valley Cemetery on Friday, Feb. 18 for Bessie I. De Foreest of Kernville. Of- ficiating was Rev. John Carpenter, Pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, Lake Isabella.


Mrs. De Foreest passed away Feb. 13 at the Memorial Hospital of Greater Bakersfield. She is survived by her daughters Helen Kukura of Kernville; Viola Pierce of Escondido, Barbara Landrum of Buena Park; sons Jack Lundgren of Norco, Alan Lundgren of La Verne, Tom De Foreest of Downey, Wes De Foreest of Eureka, 17 grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Born May 10, 1909 in Lincoln, Nebraska, Bessie Irene De Foreest was 80 years of age.

Alfred Webb


A funeral service was con- ducted Monday, Feb. 26 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Alfred E. Webb of Wofford Heights.Officiating were officers of KRV Elk Lodge 2358 BPOE.


Mr. Webb passed away Feb. 21 at Kern Valley Hospital. He is survived by his wife Gladys of Wofford Heights; sons Gerald of Roslyn, WN; Donald of Bakersfield; daughters Jackie of Wofford Heights, Jo Anne of Burbank.


Alfred Webb was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Kern Valley Elks Lodge where he had held officer positions. He had been a resident of the Kern Valley for 15 years.


Born May 1, 1917 in Sedro Wooley, Skagit County, Washington, Alred Elmer Webb was 72 years of age.

Charles Bannister of Bodfish passed away at home on Feb. 23. He is preceded in death by his wife Grace deceased in 1986 and survived by daughters Cecilia Bratten of San Diego, Jan Lazar of So. San Francisco, Barbara Morales of Placentia, Arlene Patricia Vazquez of Orange; son Charles Jr. of San Diego; two grandchildren and one great- grandchild.


Charles Bannister was a WW II veteran of the Canadian Army who served in Italy, France and Germany.


Born Jan. 19, 1904 in Emmet, Idaho, Charles Henry Bannister was 86.


Memorial donations to the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation in memory of Charles Bannister will be appreciated.


Frank Presson


Frank Presson passed away Feb. 26 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield after a long illness. He was born on Oct. 2, 1917 in Pittsburg, Kansas.


He was adjutant of American Legion, president of the NAFE and a member of the Kern Valley Historical Society and Southlake Property Owners Association.


He is survived by his wife of 44 years Eloise of Lake Isabella; son and daughter in law Frank and Jackie of Virginia; son and daughter in law Terry and Linda of North Carolina; son and daughter inlaw Charles and Terri of Bakersfield: daughter Janet Mellinger of Rio Vista, CA; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a son, Gary.

Mattie Johnson


Mattie Johnson of Southlake died at Kern Valley Hospital on Feb. 28. She was preceded in death by daughter Shirley Jo.


She is survived by husband Malcolm of Southlake; son Daniel Martin of Cambria Pines, CA, son Donald Martin of Paso Robles; daughter Celia Beth Martin of Fellows,CA; brother Eugene Cook of Southlake; 8 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.


Mattie had resided in Kern County for the past 33 years. Born May 2, 1920 in Burnet, Burnet County, Texas, Mattie Johnson was 69.


Memorial service for Matttie arranged by family will be held in Cambria Pines. Cremation ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.


Reiber Postlewait


Reiber Postlewait of Lake Isabella died at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield on March 1. He is survived by his niece An- dreal Hall of Carbondale, Kansas.


Mr. Postlewait was retired from Kerr McGee and has resid- ed in the Kern Valley for 15 years. Born March 1, 1913, Reiber was 77 years of age.

Robert Reeder


A funeral service ws conducted Friday, Feb.23 at the LDS Church in Mt. Mesa for Robert Reeder of Squirrel Valley. Officiating was Bishop Dennis Hinkey with eulogy by friends. Mr. Reeder passed away at home on Feb. 20 following illness.


He is survived by his wife of 48 years Margaret of Squirrel Valley; son Richard of Squirrel Valley, son Bruce of Bakersfield; daughter Margaret Garrison of Manhattan Beach; sister Lenore Stivers of Westlake Village.


Bob Reeder was retired from the U.S. Navy where he served through WW II and Korea retir- ing with the rank of Chief War- rant Officer. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat- ter Day Saint, Mt. Mesa; Disabl- ed American Veterans, Chap. 54 and Pearl Harbor Survivors Assoc., Chap. 19.


Born March 28, 1922 in Downers Grove, Illinois, Robert Bruce Reeder was 67 years of age.


Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery where military honors were rendered by members of Pearl Harbor Sur- vivors Assoc. DAV and VFW. Grave dedication by Bishop Den- nis Hinkey.

Paul Craig


A funeral service was con- ducted graveside at the Kern Valley cemetery in Wofford Heights for Paul Craig of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Duane Splawn, pastor of the Kern Valley Christian Church of Southlake.


Mr. Craig passed away Feb. 22 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. He is survived by his daughter Sandi of San Diego; sisters Irene Hubek, Maybel Brown, Twila Polley, all of Iowa; grand- daughter Jennie of San Diego. Paul Craig was a Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Moose, Elks, VFW and Pearl Harbor Survivors Assoc.


For 30 years Paul Craig serv- ed with the U.S. Navy through three wars, WW II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a First Class Warrant Officer.


Born Feb. 18, 1913 in Mar- shalltown, Iowa, Paul William Craig was 77 years of age.
