Cecilia Raj
Cecilia Raj, 47, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. at Cottage Hospital in San- ta Barbara.
Raj, co-owner of Ewing's on the Kern in Kernville, was a 15-year resident of the Kern Valley. Born and raised near Milan, Italy, Raj recelved several university degrees before moving to the United States.
She is survived by a daughter, Monica, 15, of Kernville, a sister, brother-in-law and two nieces in Milan. Raj leaves behind many close friends in the Kern Valley.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Velma May Maggs
A funeral service was con- ducted Thursday, Oct. 18 at the First Baptist Church, Lake Isabella for Velma May Maggs of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. David Snow, Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Maggs passed away Oct. 14 at the Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
She is preceded in death by her husband Charles deceased in 1984 and survived by her brothers Jack Jordan of Bodfish and Homer Jordan, Malvern, Arkan- sas; sisters Modean Bosserman of Bodfish and Juanita West of Lake Isabella and many nieces and nephews in California, Arizona and Arkansas.
Velma Maggs was a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 35 years.
Born Dec. 23, 1910 in White River, Prairie County, Arkansas Velma May Maggs was 79 years of age.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel for Philip Sonleitner of Riverkern. Officiating was Father Jerry Chavez of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Bakersfield. Mr. Sonleitner pased away Oct. 20 at the San Joaquin Hospital, Bakersfield. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara of Riverkern; son Philip of Houston, Texas; daughter Eileen of Van- couver, BC: four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was con- ducted Wednesday, Oct. 17 graveside at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Jean Elaine Moore of Kernville. Officiating was Rev. Chuck Hobson, pastor of the Calvary Assembly of God Church, Ridgecrest. Mrs. Moore passed away Oct. 13 at the Kern Valley Hospital after being stricken at home.
She is survived by her husband William "Bill" Moore of Kern- ville; daughter Linda Marie Wright of Inyokern; sons Larry and Gary Moore, both of Sunland; and eight grand- children. Jean Moore was a member of the California State Old Time Fiddlers and a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 15 years.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 29 at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bakersfield for Cecilia Balestri Raj, 46, of Kernville. A memorial service was held Monday at the St. Peter's Episocpal Church in Kernville earlier that day.
Cecilia Raj was born in Monte Fiorino, Italy on March 22, 1944. She died Oct. 23 in Santa Barbara.
She is survived by her daughter, Monica, 15, of Kernville; sister Rosita Preti, of Monza, Italy; mother Lina Balestri, of MonteFiorino.

Wanda Rickman of Bodfish passed away Oct. 21 at home following il- Iness. She is survived by her husband Ira Rickman of Bodfish. Mrs. Rickman had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 21 years. Born Feb. 28, 1916 in Fern- shaw, West Virginia, Wanda Rickman was 74 years of age.

Ora Opal DeJarlais
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wof- ford Heights for Ora Opal DeJarlais of Weldon. Officiating was pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.
Mrs. Dejarlais was born in Oklahoma on Feb. 13, 1908 and died in Bakersfield Oct. 26.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years Clyde DeJarlais of Weldon; sisters Vergie Deragicevich of Palm Springs, Jay Newmeyer of Baltimore MD; brothers Randolph Aronald of Canyon Country, Cecil Aronald of Salinas; sister in law Cora DeJarlais of MI, neices Ellen Bolpe of MO, Judy Anderson of MI. Mrs. DeJarlais was 82 years of age.

Rosina Grace Gilkison
A private memorial service was held Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Fours- quare Gospel Church in Wofford Heights for Rosina Grace Gilkison of Weldon. Officiating was Pastor Jerry Ruff of the Foursquare Church of Wofford Heights.
Mrs. Gilkison was born Aug. 5, 1920 in Sheridan, Wyoming and died in Mt. Mesa on Oct. 28. She was 70 years old.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years Gale Gilkison of Weldon; daughters Carol Stidham of Anaheim, Laurie Myer of Aurora; grand- daughters Jana and Nicole Myer. Mrs. Gilkison was a 40 year resident of California and a 20 year resident of the Kern Valley.

Henry Bradley Helmuth
A funeral service was held Thurs- day, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge No. 827 in Kernville for Henry Bradley Helmuth of Bodfish. Henry was born in Fresno on Dec. 17, 1916 and died Oct. 29 in Bakersfield. He was 73 years of age.
Mr. Helmuth is survived by his sisters Lola Ford of Washington, Hilda Maisano of California and four nephews.
Henry was a member of the Masonic Lodge 827, the Scottish Rite, a Shriner and the Eastern Star.
Officiating at her service were the officers of the Kern River Valley Lodge 827. Interment followed Fri- day, Nov. 2 with a brief graveside ser- vice at Forestlawn Covina Hills, CA. Mr. Helmuth was also a veteran of WW II in the U.S. Army.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for Roman Madrid of Weldon. Celebrant of the Mass will be Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude Parish. Monsignor Herdegen will also recite prayers of the Rosary before mass.
Mr. Madrid passed away Nov. 8 at the Kern Valley Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Jesusita of Weldon; son Ramon L. Madrid of Arizona; daughter Margaret Ogas of Weldon; sister Gavina Tapia of Bellflower; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Madrid was a member of the St. Jude Parish church and had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past eight years.
Born Feb. 28, 1904 in New Mex- ico, Roman Madrid was 86 years of age.

A memorial service was con- ducted Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Alton Guy "Al" Hornback of Southlake. Of- ficiating were officers of the KRV Moose Lodge No. 498 LOOM with eulogy by Joel Astor. Mr. Horn- back passed away Nov. 2 at the Kern Valley Hospital.
He is preceded in death by his wife Julie and mother Dollie and survived by brothers Roger, Mar- shall and Danny; sisters Regina and Mildred; one stepson Philip and wife Barbara reside in Los Angeles County and grand- children Julie and Guy.
Al Hornback spent most of his life as a chef and was head chef for Laughlin Enterprises in Laughlin, Nevada. During WW II he served as chef for civilian con- struction crews building military airfields. He had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the greater part of the last 10 years. Bernard "Mac" Macauley
A memorial service was con- ducted Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Bernard J. "Mac" Macauley of Lake Isabella. Of- ficiating were officers of Disabl- ed American Veterans KRV Chapter 54 of which Mr. Macauley was Past Commander. Mac Macauley passed away at the U.S. Veterans Administration Medical Center in Los Angeles on Nov. 11.
He is preceded in death by his good friend and co-officer in DAV Chapter 54 Finn Nagel and sur- vived by his son and daughter Dennis Macauley of Norwalk and Kathy Macauley of Long Beach; sisters Gertrude Rowe, Barbara Wright, Dorothy Morse all of Massachusetts; six grandchildren.
During WW II Mac Macauley served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. He had been active in Veterans Af- fairs and fund-raising for hospitalized veterans in this region in California.

Fred Baker, Pastor of the United Methodist Church in Kernville. Mrs. Rake passed away Nov. 14 at the Bakersfield Regional Rehabilita- tion Hospital.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years John deceas- ed Dec. 1972. She is survived by her son and daughter in law Donald and Pam Rake of June Lake; sister Bernice Eich of Sun City, Arizona; grandchildren Michael, Bambi, Patrick and An- drew; great-grandchildren Chris, Shannon, Kameron, Kenneth, Kenton, Joshua, Lucas and Thomas.
During WW II, Mildred served as an aircraft electrical assembler sodering wiring at the Douglas El Segundo Plant. She had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 27 years.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Weldon; daughter and son in law Jo Ann and Don Johnson of Palmdale, daughter and son in law Marilyn and Richard Toborg of Onyx; sons Bill of Washington and Larry and Don both of California; grandchildren Eileen, Sean, Tony, Christie, Scott, Dan and Mary, great-grandchildren Kyle, Stephanie, Danielle, Tricia, Brianna, Carissa and Kayla; one cousin Doris resides in Kansas.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday, Nov. 17 at the St. Jude's Parish Catholic Church Wofford Heights for Lisa Harper Vaughan of Lake Isabella, celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor A.G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish, with prayers of the Rosary said before Mass by the St. Jude Altar Society. Lisa pass- ed away Nov. 12 at the Univer- sary Medical Center in Las Vegas following injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
She is survived by her husband William "Billy" Vaughn of Im- perial Ca; mother and stepfather Barbara and Richard Perham of Lake Isabella; father Frank V. Harper of Boron; grandmother Bernice Downard of Lake Isabella; brothers Frank Harper of Lake Isabella, James Harper of Boron; sister Michelle Harper of California, aunt and uncle Diane and Robert Wolney of Lake Isabella; uncle and aunt James and Judy Downard of Lake Isabella; aunt and uncle Carol and Archie Plante of Weldon and many cousins and friends in the Kern Valley. Lisa was a 1983 graduate of Kern Valley High School.

Born Jan. 6, 1915, Eloise Lucille was 75 years old.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Henry; daughters Faith Morrison of Reno and San- dra Nielsen of Bakersfield; grandchildren Scott Stepherson of South Lake, Kim Stepherson of San Diego and three great grandchildren.
Lucille was a resident for the Kern Valley for the past 50 years. She was a member of the Kern- ville Methodist Church and Moose Lodge.

Rader Marie Kittila, 72, died Nov. 24 in La Mirada. Funeral services were held at the Allen- Salas Funeral Chapel in Bell Gardens on Nov. 27. Burial followed at the Park Lawn Memorial Park, Commerce.
Mrs. Kittila was born April 26, 1918 in Hollywood, Missouri and came to California in 1945. She has resided in Lake Isabella for 20 years.

Donald Frank Ray was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy who served aboard the LST 130 and attack transport USS Cheleb in the Asiatic-Pacific region. For this service he was awarded two bronze battle stars and the Phillipine Liberation Medal with one bronze battle star.

Visitation was conducted Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Valley Mortuary for Elmer H. "Ed" Shackleford of Lake Isabella. Mr. Shackleford passed away Dec. 2 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy; sons Donald of Chatsworth, Steve of Santee, CA, John of Lake Isabella; daughters Bonnie Mancinelli of Lake Isabella; sisters Thelma Ellison of San Diego, Velma Middleton of Michigan, Pollyann Simms of Tennessee and six grandchildren.

Bertis Watkins
Bertis Watkins passed away Oct. 30 in Seattle, Washington. He was born in Bolivar, Missouri on Sept. 2, 1910.
Shortly after his retirement as a carpenter in 1972, Pauline and Bertis moved to Wofford Heights; until that time, they us- ed Wofford Heights as their weekend retreat and vacation residence.
Until Pauline's death in 1987, they were members of the Good Sam Travel Club. Bertis was ac- tive in the Elks Lodge as well as a member of the Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his children, Glen of Fremont and Norma Myers of Seattle and five grand- children and 10 great- grandchildren.
Interment was at Rose Hills, Whittier.

A Mass for the Repose of the soul of Quinton M. Embree of Lake Isabella was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 13 at the St. Ann's Parish Catholic Church in Ridgecrest. Celebrant of the Mass was Monsignor Kevin Cleary.
Mr. Embree passed away Dec. 8 at the Antelope Valley Medical Center, Lancaster.
He is preceded in death by his wife Ann deceased Aug. 9, 1990 and surviv- ed by his sons Jimmie of Ridgecrest, Stanley of Arizona; daughter Sue Jensen of Los Angeles; six grand- children and two great grandchildren.
Quinton Embree was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in the Pacific aboard the Cruiser Min- neapolis and the Escort Carrier Takanis Bay. He was awarded six Bronze Battle Stars.
Born Feb. 2, 1920 in Dos Palos, California, Quinton Merelyn Embree was 70 years of age. Interment of cremated remains at the U.S. Na- tional Cemetery, Riverside. Crema- tion arrangements by Valley Mortuary.
Marguerite Belle Robertson
Marguerite Belle Robertson passed away Dec. 10.
She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Anderson; niece Darlene Blacketer; nephew Jerry Merrriout; grand nephews Greg Merriout; nephew Wiliam Van Heuveln, grand nephews Richard Blacketer, Kevin Blacketer, Rene Van Heuveln, Kent Van Heuveln, niece Peggy Ruiz; seven great grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Dec. 14 at the Chapel of Turner and Stevens, Alhambra. Private interment.
Robert Johnson
A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Robrt C. Johnson of Lake Isabella. Of- ficiating was Rev. Monsignor An- thony G. Herdegen, pastor of the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church of Wof- ford Heights.
Mr. Johnson passed away Dec. 13 at Kern Valley Hospital.
He is survived by his sons David of San Dimas, Richard and Kenneth both of Everett, Washington; daughters Cheryl Talbot of St. Paul, Minnesota, Carol Anderson of Nevada, Renee Johnson of California; brothers Charles and Al both of St. Paul, Oliver of Montana and four grandchildren.
Born April 6, 1924 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, Robert Clayton Johsnon was 66 years of age.

Charles Warne of Lake Isabella passed away at home Dec. 7.
Ile is survived by his brothers Walter of Lake Isabella, Claude of Lancaster, Laurence of San Diego, Rollie of Tujunga, Robert of San Diego; sisters Margie Post of An- tiock, Barbara Pyatt of Selma and nieces and nephews.

Roy Nelson
A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Valley Mor- tuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Leroy "Roy" A. Nelson of Weldon. Of- ficiating was Rev.Charles Smith, Pastor of the United Methodist Church.
Mr. Nelson passed away Dec. 12 at home following illness.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Bertha of Weldon; son Darrell of Oakland; daughter Carol of Los Angeles; sister Bertha Raskey of Nebraska and three grandchildren.
Born Oct. 27, 1907 in Malcolm, Nebraska, Leroy Alfred Nelson was 83 years of age.

Roy C. Ballew passed away Nov. 28 at the Veterans Hospital in Sepulveda.
Ile was a long time resident of Lake Isabella.
He is survived by one sister Ber- niece Yoss of Brooks, Oregon; brother Bruce Ballew of Woodburn, Oregon; two nephews, Bruce Ballew of Lancaster and Ron Ballew of Lom- poc and one niece, Robbi Casey of Quartz fills.
