Town Statistics.
The first and second columns indicate the legal dis- tance from Hartford and New Haven. The third, the amount of Deposit Fund. The fourth, the Grand List. The fifth indicates the expenses of pauperism, and the sixth, all other town expenses except interest and roads and bridges. It will thus be seen that pauperism costs more than all other town objects, except as above, of which intemperance is the chief cause. In fact, ex- penses growing out of intemperance, including crim- inal prosecutions, and time and expenses of Selectmen in looking up and taking care of paupers made by in- temperance, are fully equal to the expenses of pau- perism which do not result from intemperance. Thus the taxes paid for intemperance, may be set down as the same as expenses for pauperism.

School Societies.
The enumeration of children is made in January. In our circular, we proposed the question, " What public taxes are raised, or what town or society ap- propriations are made to schools ?"-but obtained only the few answers as given. The proportion of the avails of the deposit fund appropriated to schools, was given in the Register for 1850.
