RAILROADS.
Railroads in Connecticut.
The first charter granted by the State was in 1832; and the first train commenced running on the Stonington road in 1839. During the brief period of 15 years, over 600 miles of completed railroad have been put in operation; and 100 miles more are in process of construction Every important point in the State is accommodated with railroad facilities, better than any similar extent of country in the United States, and perhaps on the globe. Probably no point in the State is more than ten miles from a railroad. The capital invested is about 24 millions of dollars, more than the entire banking capital of the State. The only roads which have made dividends the past year, are the Hartford, New Haven and Springfield; the Norwich and Worcester; and the Stonington. The New Haven and Northampton is leased to the New York and New Haven Railroad.
