STATISTICS OF TOWNS.

Statistics of Towns.

In addition to the Grand List, we designed to pre- sent the statistics of Manufactures in this State ; but the returns are so interwoven with other matters, that we can give only approximate values. In the follow- ing table, the 1st column contains the number of Taxable Polls in each town. The 2d, the Valuation of Property. The 3d, the Valuation of Mills, Stores, &c. The 4th, Investments in Manufactures and Man- ufacturing operations. In the returns there is a col- umn headed, " Bank, Insurance and Manufacturing Stocks," but what proportion of this belongs to the latter, it is impossible to determine. There is but little uniformity in the returns. The same items in different towns, are, it will be perceived, put under different heads. In our circular to towns, we desired information as to the "Number of Manufactories, and principal articles manufactured." The replies are appended in the form of notes. By means of the table, and the subjoined information, a tolerably cor- rect knowledge of the amount of manufacturing, and the kind of goods manufactured, in each town in the State, may be obtained. From a few towns, the returns are incomplete.
