NORTON.


1. WILLIAM (younger bro. of Rev. John, an eminent divine, of Ipswich and Boston), was for a short time a resident of Hing. Free- man March 3, 1636. He d. at Ipswich, 30 Apr. 1694, and by his will of two days preceding, proved 15 May foll., names w. Lucy, who, it is said, was dau. of Emanuel Downing. She d. 5 Feb. 1697-98. The fam. is a very ancient one, tracing back to "Le Sign' de Noruile," who came into Eng. with William the Conqueror, and was constable. The

NOTE. - It is not improbable that the parents of William, viz. : William and Ann Norton, came to America with their two sons on account of a disaster to the fa.'s est. (Savage, vol. iii. p. 292); and if so, he may have been the William Norton whose death is recorded in Hobart's Diary, June, 1639, and she the wid. Norton who m. in Hing. June 11, 1649, John Tucker, Sent. But of this I am not certain.


In the note-book of Thomas Lechford, Esq., a lawyer of Boston, 1638-1641, it is shown that a complaint was made by Anne Norton of Hing., wid. of William Norton, her late husband, deceased, against Samuel Ward of Hing., concerning a piece of meadow land which had been mortgaged to the sd Ward. ("Trans. of the Am. Antiq. Soc." vol. vii. p. 433.)


2. JOHN 2 (William 1), the second minister of Hing. was b. at Ips- wich, Mass., ab. 1651. He grad. at Har. Coll. 1671, and was ordained colleague pastor with Rev. Peter Hobart in Hing. 27 Nov. 1678. He succeeded Mr. Hobart, who d. 20 Jan. 1678-79, and continued in the ministry here until his decease, a period of nearly thirty-eight yrs. Mr. Norton m. at Boston, Nov. 29, 1678, Mary Mason, dau. of Arthur and Joanna (Parkey) Mason. She d. at Braintree, at the residence of her s. in law, John Quincy, June, 1740. He d. 3 Oct. 1716, æt. 66th yr. Resided on North St., where now stands the dwelling owned and occupied by heirs of the late Col. Charles Lane. Letters of adminis- tration were granted to wid. Mary Norton, Jan. 10, 1716-17, to admin- ister upon the est. of her late husband, John Norton, who d. in Hing. intestate.
