MASON.

CAPT. JOHN, who finished up the Pequod War in 1637, being then in chief command, afts. major-general, etc., was prob. a resident of Hing. for awhile subsequent to that eventful period of our early New Eng. history. Several yrs. later he resided at Windsor, at Saybrook, and lastly, at Norwich, where he d. 30 Jan. 1671-72, æt. 72 yrs. Whether he was twice m. or not is uncertain ; but his m'ge to Peck (prob. dau. of Robert Peck of Hing.) is recorded in Hobart's Journal, under date of July, 1639. In Suffolk Deeds, vol. i. p. 82, is the foll. : "Capt" John Mason of Windsor granted vnto Thomas Thaxter of Hingham his house & land in Hingham wch formerly was M' Robert Pecks wth all the priviledges thereto belonging & this was by an absolute deed of sale dated 5 (5) 1647, and acknowledged 6 (6) 1647 before M' Endecot." As it is a matter of record that Robert Peck, the minister and teacher, came to Hing. in 1638 with his w. and two ch., and returned to Eng. in 1641 with his w. and one child, i. e., his s. Joseph, it seems to be almost conclusive that the child left here was the w. of Capt. Mason; and this belief is strengthened by the foregoing conveyance. The
