RICE.


NATHAN, kn. as " Colonel," from Sturbridge, Mass., and b. 1753, was a s. of Rev. Nathan, the first settled minister of that town. He was grad. at Har. Coll. 1773, in the class with William Caldwell and Mar- tin Leavitt, both of whom were identified with Hing. He soon after settled in Hing. Here, for ab. two yrs., he taught a grammar school, and from 1783 to 1798 inc., was in the mercantile business, trading, fitting out vessels, etc., a part of the time as one of the firm of Leavitt and Rice. From 1801 to 1805 inc., he represented the town of Hing. at the General Court. He was an accomplished speaker as well as an accomplished military officer, and while a resident of the town filled many offices of trust and responsibility. He took an active part in the struggle for independence ; was an officer of prominence with Gen- eral Lincoln during the War of the Revolution; and in 1799, when the unpleasantness occurred between France and the United States, he was chief in command of a body of troops at Oxford. He m. first, Feb. 12, 1781, Meriel Leavitt, the only dau. of Elisha and Ruth (Marsh) Leavitt, and sister of his classmate Martin Leavitt. She was b. in Hing. Feb. 28, 1758, and d. 7 Jan. 1790, æt. 32d yr. For his sec. w. he m. Jan. 16, 1791, Sophia Blake, dau. of Joseph and Deborah (Smith) Blake, and sister of Charlotte, the w. of his classmate Wil- liam Caldwell. She was bt. in Hing. Sept. 26, 1762. In 1811 they removed to Burlington, Vt., where he passed the remainder of his life in agricultural pursuits, and there d. 17 Apr. 1834, æt. 81 yrs.
