OLIVER (Thomas = Priscilla Cushing), was b. at Lunenburg, Mass., June 3, 1807. His mother, Priscilla Cushing, was a dau. of Col. Charles and Hannah (Croade) Cushing (II. 164), and a descendant of Matthew Cushing, one of the early settlers of Hing. Oliver was grad. at Har. Coll. 1826. He was ordained Nov. 9, 1831, at Northampton. After preaching for short periods at Northampton, Newburyport, and Boston, he was called, in May, 1839, to supply the pulpit of the Third Cong. Society in Hing. ; and Apr. 1, 1840, he was permanently settled as the minister of this parish. This pastoral relation continued until Sept. 30, 1856, when he accepted the position of president of the Meadville Theological School. Sept. 1, 1863, he succeeded Rev. Convers Francis at Har. Coll., as professor of theology, and Dean of the Divinity School, which position he held until 1877, when he retired from active work. S. T. D., Har. Coll. 1857. He m. first,

1. JOHN, prob. b. in Eng., Apr. 30, 1690, according to tradition, came to the Mass. Bay in New Eng. as " carpenter " of the English war ship "Lucitanus," and, with one of his associates, landed at Cohasset. It is said that he was pressed into this service, and there- fore felt justified in leaving the ship at the first favorable opportunity. It appears from recent investigation by members of the fam. that he was of respectable parentage, and had received a good education. He m. at Boston (pub. in Hing. June 29, 1717) Rachel Tower, dau. of Richard and Abigail (Farrow) Tower. She was b. in Hing. Feb. 24, 1696-97. John d. ab. 1772 or 1773. His will, dated 6 Nov. 1770, was proved 7 May, 1773. Resided in the sec. pre.
