For his participation in the Shays Rebellion he was later on sentenced to death, but was reprieved and pardoned by the Governor as recorded elsewhere. In 1790 he removed with others to Barre, Vt., and a little later to Brighton, N. Y., where he died at the home of his son Justus W., Aug. 13, 1836. He was buried in the old Baptist burial grounds at Pittsford, by the side of his wife, Elizabeth (who died July 30, 1826, ae. 69), and his son Henry who died July 30, 1829. About 1905 the old grounds were abandoned and converted into a gravel pit and their remains were removed by some old settlers to the " New Cemetery " at Pittsford. His stone is marked " Capt. GARFIELD.
The first of this name in New England, EDWARD1 GARFIELD, was born in England about 1575, and emigrated from near Chester, on the border of Wales, to Massachusetts, about 1630. He located in Watertown soon after its settlement, remaining through life. He died June 14, 1672, ae. 97.
His son Edward2 Jr. was born about 1604. Capt. Benjamin3, son of Edward Jr. and Rebecca -, was born in 1643. Mar- ried (Ist) Mehitable Hawkins, who died Nov. 28, 1717, married (2ª) Elizabeth Bridge. He was an active and prominent citizen of Watertown. His son Samuel4 married Mary Bowman, daughter of Nathaniel Bowman Esq. and had in Watertown, a son, Eliakim5, born Oct. 3, 1732. Daniel6, son of Eliakim, with his wife Anna (or Hannah) came here from Gardners farms in 1766.

GATES Clessrow, son of Clark and Margaret Gates, born in Chelsea, Vt., Oct. 19, 1823; died in Princeton, Dec. 18, 1898; married (Ist) 1849, N. Elvira Pond, born in Hubbardston, March, 1825, died Dec. 12, 1860. He married (2ª) Mary P. (Rice) Chickering and came to live on the Ira Rice place in Princeton (now owned by Miss Fuller) about July, 1861. Here he worked at his trade of boot maker, but later moved to the Isaac Thompson place, where he engaged in farming. Children by first marriage were:

GIBBS.
The immigrant ancestor of this family MATTHEW1 GIBBS came from England and was in Charlestown as early as 1650-54, but with his wife Mary Bradish soon located in that part of Sudbury set off to Framingham. He had a son Matthew2 who married twice (Ist) Mary Moore (2ª) Elizabeth Moore and had a son Joseph3 who married Mary (Mercy) Clarke July 1, 1712. Another son John2 married Sarah Cutler and had a son Nathaniel3, who married Bathsheba Parmenter. From these two Matthew2 and John2 the Princeton families of this name are descended.

GIBBS Joseph4 (Joseph3, Matthew2, Matthew1), son of Joseph3 and Mary (Clarke) Gibbs, born (bap.) Sept. 13, 1719. Mar- ried in Sudbury Hannah Howe, was an intermittent inhabitant of Westminster, from 1742. He hailed from Narragansett No. 2, in 1757, when he enlisted in Capt. Benjamin Ballard's Co. for service in the F. & I. War. With his wife and family about 1760, he removed to Princeton, where their three youngest children were born. He died May 12, 1774 (May 14, 1774, ae. 54, C. R.). She died (May 24 (or 22), 1772, ae. 42, C. R.). Children :

time came Capt. John4 and Michael Gill4 Esq., nephews of Gov. Moses3 and sons of Col. Michael3, who was a brother of the Governor.
Gov. Moses3 and Col. Michael3 were sons of Capt. John2 and grandsons of LIEUT. COL. MICHAEL1 the (supposed) first emigrant. Capt. John2 married Elizabeth, the third child of Moses and Elizabeth (Knight) Abbott, who after his decease married (2ª) Dea. Michael Brigden. Lieut. Col. Michael1 married Relief, the third child of John Dowse, of Charlestown, and Relief (Holland) Dowse, from Dorchester.
GILL Lieut .- Gov .- Moses3 (Capt .- John2, Lieut .- Col .- Michael1), the fourth child of Capt. John2, and Elizabeth (Abbot) Gill, was born in Charlestown, Jany. 18, 1733-4, and died while acting Governor of Massachusetts, May 20, 1800. He mar- ried March 27, 1759 Sarah Prince, b. July 16, 1723, the only surviving daughter of Rev. Thomas Prince, pastor of the old South Church of Boston, and in 1767 took up his residence in Princeton, where he inherited from the Prince estate, some three thousand acres of land, and lived on that portion now known as the Boylston farm, which was later occupied by the Boylstons. The names of three negro servants in the family of Gov. Gill appear on the town records of Princeton.

GILL John4 (Col .- Michael3, Capt .- John2, Lt .- Col .- Michael1), son of Col. Michael3 and Mercy Gill, born in 1749, married Hannah Mayo, and lived where George O. Skinner later lived, in a large yellow house which was taken down by Mr. Skinner and the present house built, now occupied by his grandson Mr. Frank A. Skinner.

iv. JOEL-HOLDEN, b. Sept. 16, 1830, was a teacher in the West, and later on, a Methodist Minister in the South. He married Ophelia McMaster, in Townville, South Carolina and had a son CHARLES RUFUS now living, who was born the first year of the Civil War, the mother dying at the time of his birth. The father, Joel-Holden, entered the Confederate army, joining the " Palmetto Sharpshooters." He was wounded in the engage- ment at Frazer's Farm before Richmond June 30, 1862, and died while suffering the amputation of a limb.
v. THOMAS-HILL, b. Sept. 22, 1833, enlisted as Ist Sergt. in Co. H. 25th Mass. Reg. Sept. 21, 1861, served in the Union army until discharged Oct. 20, 1864, d. in Cornland, Bates Co., Mo., in 1884.

vii. HENRY-BAGG, b. Oct. 10, 1813, married in Vermont, Druscilla Readfield and died in Du-Plain, Mich. A son THEODORE died in the army and his brothers WALLACE and GEORGE removed to Ovid, Michigan.

3. GLEASON Ezra7 (Phineas6, John5, Phineas4, Isaac3, Thomas2, Thomas1), son of Phineas6 and Abigail (Temple) Gleason of Boylston, born in Princeton, Sept. 24, 1799, married Nov. 29, 1826, Arathusa Stone of Rutland. He died Nov. 7, 1847, ae. 48. Their children were:

ii. JESSE-DANA, b. Nov. 16, 1829, d. in Army. His daughter EMMA married Charles Crosby and lived in Danielsonville, Ct., they had a son CHARLES CROSBY.
