Princeton Families

KEYES.

There is some uncertainty in regard to the ancestral relations of the numerous branches of this family in Princeton and else- where, but they probably were all descendants from ROBERT1, who came early to New England and settled in Watertown in 1633. Elias2, son of ROBERT1, born May 20, 1643, settled in Sudbury, married Sarah Blandford and had several children.

The first of the Keyes family in Princeton was Sarah, daughter of " the famous Maj. John Keyes" of Shrewsbury, who married Joshua Wilder, son of Capt. Nathaniel Wilder of Lancaster and removed to Princeton, of which place they were the first settlers. Their daughter said to be the first white child born in Princeton.

The third settlement in town was made by Robert4, well known as the father of "Lucy, the lost child of Wachusett."

KEYES Robert4 (Stephen3, Elias2, Robert1), son of Stephen3 and Anna (Robbins) Keyes, born in Chelmsford, Mass., Sept. 21, 17II, married in Shrewsbury, Dec. 24, 1740, Martha, daughter of Asa and Martha (Eager) Bowker. They were both members of the Church and were dismissed in 1764, from Shrewsbury, to " one about to be in Princeton."

It was in May, 1751, that Robert, with his family, removed to the district of Princetown and settled on the farm which he had purchased of Benjamin Muzzey at the foot of Wachu- sett, east side. Mr. Keyes was by trade a blacksmith and probably had a small shop near his house where he combined blacksmithing with farming, or at least fashioned the rude implements necessary to pioneer farming. The foundations of these two buildings are still visible. Mrs. Keyes died August 9, 1789, ae. 68, and her husband March I, 1795. The children of Robert and Martha were:

i. STEPHEN, b. Jany. 19, 1742, d. Dec. 20, 1748.

ii. JONAS, b. Dec. 24, 1743, d. July 21, 1822, in Princeton.

iii. MARTHA, b. Dec. 6, 1745, m. Nov. 24, 1799, John Gleason.

iv. ANNA, b. June 21, 1748, m. Oct. 30, 1769, Samuel Mosman.

v. LUCY, b. Aug. 15, 1750. "The lost child." (See sketch of Lucy Keyes, in Vol. I.)

vi. PHEBE, b. July 31, 1752, m. Jude Sawyer, who d. Gardner, 1845, ae. 93, no issue.

vii. ABRAHAM, b. March 10, 1755.
