of health and taste led him back to the Ancestral farm in Princeton. The estate known as the "Hillside Farm " in the center of the town which had been owned and occupied by his father and grandfather successively each for a full generation. Like his father before him he was prominently connected with the Worcester Agricultural Society and deeply interested in New England Agriculture, taking special inter- est in breeding and raising Jersey Cattle. He died Feb. 3, 1890. Children :

3. BROOKS David6 (David5, Nathaniel4, Jabez3, John2, Henry1), son of David and Patience (White) Brooks, born in Princeton, Mass., May 20, 1793, went to Ohio in 1817 where he married Dec. 19, 1822, Keziah Hamlin daughter of Nathaniel Hamlin, born Oct. 16, 1804, the first white child born in what is now Columbus, Ohio. After locating in Columbus, Mr. Brooks several times returned to Princeton though at that time the Journey was long and filled with danger. The trip had to be made overland by horseback or horse and buck-board through the then almost-unsettled country. He was owner of the White Horse Tavern, a famous hostelry of that day in Columbus, Ohio. The name afterwards changed to Eagle Hotel, situated on the National road. He died July 9, 1848; she died Feb. 4, 1875.

BROOKS Charles5 (John4, Daniel3, Joshua2, Thomas!), son of John4 and Lydia, born April 6, 1732 in Concord, Mass. Mar- ried Nov. 24, 1757, Mary Hapgood, born June 4, 1740, daughter of John and Abigail (Morse) Hapgood of Marlboro, Mass. The emigrant ancestor of this family Thomas1 Brooks, supposed to be a brother of Henry1, came over from London in the early days of the Massachusetts Colony, as early as 1631, and settled in Watertown, was admitted a freeman Dec. 7, 1636. He moved to Concord in 1638, where he was in public life, serving as a Constable or Deputy for eight years. He had by his wife Grace, four children all probably born in England. The eldest, Joshua2, known as Dea. Joshua, a tanner, lived in Concord now Lincoln. He married Hannah Mason and had eleven children, the fourth Daniel3, born March 5, 1663, married Anne Merriam. Their son John4, the sixth of their eleven children, lived in Concord and Acton where he was a selectman and deacon. He died March 6, 1777, his widow Lydia, June 3, 1802. Charles5 was the third of their eleven children. He moved into Princeton from Marlboro, Mass., with his family in 1764. He was in Lieu- tenant Maynard's Company of Marlboro at Fort William Henry in 1757, when Montcalm with his nine thousand French and Indian troops beseiged it and after six days fighting compelled them to surrender which was done under stipula- tion that the twenty-five hundred Americans in the fort should be given safe transit to Fort Edward. After being disarmed and started on their way, Montcalm's Indian allies fell upon them and slaughtered eighteen hundred of them. Charles Brooks was one of the few who escaped. He died in Princeton, March 8, 1798 and his widow Aug. 16, 1808. Their children were:

He married (2ª) Nancy Davis, daughter of Samuel and Catherine of Oakham (int.) May 25, 1822. She died Sept. 14, 1868, a. 86 (T.R. Sept. 12). He died Oct. 7, 1865. He was an active member of the Methodist Church, contributing liberally to its support and to the build- ing of the Meeting House, also paying two hundred dollars towards the purchase of a bell. His widow, "Nabby " Brooks, left a fund of six hundred dollars the interest of which was to go to public Worship.


He lived in a house built by him and afterwards owned by the Boston, Barre and Gardner R.R. Company, which has since been used as a depot called " Brooks Station." Chil- dren of Jonas and Lydia were:

Princeton. Dr. Brooks served on the School Committee and was active in the Baptist Church. His shoe factory and house (now known as the Pratt's Cottage) was in the West Village. He was postmaster from the 15th of Feb. 1859 to 19th of Dec. 1862 and from 7th of March 1865 to 27th of Sept. 1866. He died in Boston, Sept. 30, 1889. She died Sept. II, 1872, in Boston. Children:

It appears that there were quite a number of immigrants of this name who came from across the sea, within fifty years of the settlement of Plymouth, whose descendants are scattered throughout the country, becoming the heads of distinct lines. Owing to the difficulty of tracing their ancestry the record of the Browns of Princeton begins with the first permanent settler of the name, in town.


BROWN James, born in Wenham. With wife Abigail and sons, James and Gilson came from Sterling 1791, was taxed 1790 in Princeton. He died Feb. 2, 1839, ae. 79. Children of James and Abigail were:


i. JAMES, b. March 19, 1787, m. Betsey Carter, d. in Princeton, Aug. 1, 1862. She d. Oct. 9, 1877. Children: (I) JOSIAH- CARTER, m. Dec. 24, 1835, Mary K. Whitcomb, dau. BRYANT Isaac2 of Rutland, son of John1 and Esther (Stone) Bryant, born January 6, 1762, was taxed in Princeton as early as 1785. He married Betty (Betsey) Howe, daughter of Abner, (int.) April II, 1788, died at Rutland, June 4, 1836, ae. 74. One child:

BRYANT John (Isaac2, John1), son of the above Isaac2, born in Rutland, Feb. 14, 1799, married (Ist) March 28, 1833, Betsey Parmenter, daughter of Luther and Elizabeth (Thompson) Parmenter, born Nov. 28, 1810, died Sept. 28, 1840. He married (2nd) Melissa Pierce of Hubbardston, March 31, 1842, daughter of Moses H. and Anna (Rice) Pierce, born Nov. 29, 18II. They lived in Rutland until 1834, then in Princeton, where he died Sept. 30, 1865. Children of first wife:

BUCK.


The immigrant ancestor of this family WILLIAM BUCK', was born in England in 1585. He came to New England in 1635, at the age of fifty, in ship Increase and settled in Cam- bridge, Mass. He died Jany. 24, 1657-8. We have no record of his wife or children other than his son Roger2, who filed the inventory of his father's estate, April 3, 1658. He succeeded to his fathers estate and followed his fathers trade of plow- wright. In 1685 he removed to Woburn, where he died Nov. 10, 1693. His son Ephraim3, married Sarah Brooks, Jany. 1, 1670. Ephraim4 married Esther Waget, Dec. 1, 1696. Isaac5 married Ruth Graves, Isaac6 married Mary Richards and resided in Southboro, Mass. Isaac7 married in 1780, Patty Phillips, both of Lancaster. Their son Silas8, born in Sterling, was a carpenter and millwright, married Deborah Beaman of Sterling. James Orison9, born at Sterling, May 9, 1818, married Azubah Smith of New York State. Their children were: Thurston10, Eugene- Richardson10 and Frank-Herbert10.
