History of Princeton

GREGORY.

Gregory, Mac Gregory, etc., are some of the variations of the name of Mc. Gregor, which are found in the early records.

The later generations have generally adopted the first, Gregory. The families of this name in Princeton are descendants of DANIEL1 Mc GREGOR of Weston and the Gregory's of Weston are un- questionably of the Mc. Gregors. In 1709, they were among the first who signed the covenant of the church in Weston, then styled Mac Gregor on the parish records. It is related that early in the settlement of the colonies, two Mc. Gregor boys were placed on a ship, sailing for America, having a letter to the Cap- tain and they were landed at Watertown to seek their fortunes in this country.

It was suspected by these lads that they were got rid of that others of the clan could obtain property they were entitled to. This theory appears more probable from the fact that several years after, a party came from Scotland to trace the American branch of the McGregors, but for some reason not stated, they failed to discover the McGregors in the Gregorys.

Daniel Mc. Gregor1 of Watertown Farms (Weston), married Dec. 20, 1693, Elizabeth Robinson. He died March 20, 1736. Their children were: Daniel, William, John and twins, Abraham and Isaac. Isaac2, the twin brother of Abraham, born Aug. 24, 1704, married May 10, 1734, Grace Harrington, daughter of Benjamin and Grace (Allen) Harrington. He, Isaac2, died Oct. - , 1755. His widow, Grace, married (2ª) Nov. 3, 1761, Joseph Woolson, Jr., uncle of Dr. Ephraim Woolson of Princeton.

Elisha3 and Phineas3, sons of Isaac2 and Grace, settled in Princeton, 1767-8, bought Lot 9, Watertown Farms, and were taxed in 1769. Elisha3, born Feb. 12, 1738, died Feb. 11, 1823, in his 85th year (g.s. unmarried).

GREGORY Phineas3 (Isaac2, Daniel1), son of Isaac2 and Grace (Harrington) Gregory, born Feb. 20, 1743, m. (Ist) Nov. 7, 1767, Elizabeth Hobbs, dau. Ebenezer and Eunice (Garfield) Hobbs, born Oct. II, 1748, died Oct. 23, 1787. He married (2ª) Molly (or Polly) Cowdin, Jany. 21, 1789, she died, Feb. 23, 1794. He married (3ª) Oct. 15, 1794, Mercy Jennison of Natick, she died Sept. 23, 1809, ae. 52. He died Dec. 2, 1821, ae. 78. Children of Phineas and Elizabeth (Hobbs) Gregory:

This information gained from his grandfather, who was one of the first settlers, his father and their contemporaries, enabled him to furnish information which the town records and other sources failed to give. He was a member of the firm of D. H. Gregory & Co. and was for several years town Treasurer.
