"THE CROSS OF GRAY"
Dedicated to the late Frederick W. Hilton
Mid Weymouth High's soft lawns and pines A cross of fairest gray Stands sentry o'er the youthful lines That pass him day by day. He teaches in his gentle way That spirit cannot die! "Pro Patria" we hear him say, "Means love for Weymouth High!"
Staunch stands the watch of Weymouth High And gives for our brave dead These simple passwords to the hill Where Weymouth's men are bred. We love thee! Alma Mater! Oh let the years roll by! Our song we raise! Loud rings the praise! Of grand old Weymouth High!
REPORT OF THE EAST WEYMOUTH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE
Our Committee held its organization meeting on May 23, 1955 and a report of its activities in 1955 will be found on page 327 of the Town Re- port of 1955.
The contract for the erection of the school was signed on January 30, 1956 with the Grande Construction Company, in the amount of $454,749.00. Construction work started on February 27, 1956 and at this time it appears that the classroom wing will be ready for occupancy by the end of Febru- ary or early in March. Work has progressed on schedule with few prob- lems and a minimum of extra costs.
The total appropriation available for the building, site work and fur- nishings was $548,000.00 The building provides 12 regular classrooms, a classroom for a retarded or special class, a remedial reading room, a com- bination playroom, assembly hall, and lunchroom, and the usual principal's office, health room, and teachers' room.
The budget adopted by the Committee as an estimate for the appro- priation and as a guide to expenditures is as follows:

REPORT OF THE SHAW SCHOOL REPLACEMENT BUILDING COMMITTEE
A Special Town Meeting held on September 26, 1955 appropriated $25,000.00 for the preparation of plans and specifications for a new twelve- room elementary school to be erected on the site purchased from the Stet- son Shoe Company, and authorized the Moderator to appoint a Building Committee of seven members for this school ...
The Committee held its organization meeting on November 9, 1955 and scheduled meetings to interview architects. On December 12th, fol- lowing three meetings and a trip to visit schools built by architects under consideration, the Committee selected Perry, Shaw, Hepburn and Dean of Boston as the architects for the new school. On February 16, 1956 the preliminary sketches for the building were approved. On August 1st the final plans and specifications were approved subject to the approval of the State School Building Assistance Commission.
Bids were opened on August 30, 1956. Only five bids were received, the lowest for $609,004.00 Due to the seemingly high bids, the Building

Committee unanimously Voted to reject all bids and to instruct the archi- tects to restudy the plans and specifications to reduce the cost. Since this date, the Committee has worked with the architects in revising the plans. One wing, which would have housed a classroom for retarded pupils, has been eliminated, and the room has been included in the main building. The branch library room requested by the Library Trustees has been combined under a remedial reading room. Many changes were also made in the specifications, with the hope of lowering the cost of the building.
Bids will be opened on February 15, 1957, and an appropriation for the construction of the building will be sought at the Annual Town Meeting in March.
The Committee has held twenty six meetings since its organization.
