BOARD OF FENCE VIEWERS
January 18, 1957
Honorable Board of Selectmen Town Hall Weymouth, Massachusetts
Gentlemen:
The Board of Fence Viewers were faced with several stubborn cases this past year which involved considerable travelling and much effort to solve satisfactorily. However, it can be reported that due to cooperation of the members there remain no left-over cases at the end of 1956. In- creased building of fences is evident due to highly competitive advertising of manufacturers who seem able to convince more and more homeowners that a house is not a home without a fence. Many problems have arisen this past year in our thickly populated areas which in the past were settled without benefit of adequate official supervision.
Because of discussion of an impending Public Works Department for the town, it was considered advisable not to proceed with the thought of discussing coordination of the fence viewers' problems with the Building Inspector's department, an idea which seemed worth studying a year ago. The year 1957 will no doubt bring about a sense of the importance of the work of the fence viewers and establish the board in its proper niche in the Public Works program. Thank you for cooperation during the year.
AMY HILL DUNCAN
Clerk, Board of Fence Viewers

REPORT OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
January 11, 1957
The Honorable Board of Selectmen
Weymouth, Massachusetts
Gentlemen:
I herewith submit the annual report of the Fire Department for the year ending December 31, 1956.
The department responded to nine hundred fiftyfive alarms during the year. Ninety-four of the total were for fires involving buildings. Two hundred thirty-seven were accident and first aid calls.
The total number of personnel making up the department is seventy five men at the present time.
A regular program of training has been carried out throughout the year. The recent construction of a concrete pump tank at Headquarters Training Grounds will be of great value in training the personnel on pumping engines and hose lay-outs.
The apparatus is in good condition. It was necessary to replace the heating boiler at Station One during the year. With painting and a few moderate repairs the stations can be maintained in good condition.
Our schedule of building inspections has been carried on throughout the year. The Junior Fire Marshal Plan was continued through its fourth year. By this program we are able to reach the school children in a course of fire prevention.
