STATEMENT IN REGARD TO TOWN LOAN.

By vote of the town in May last, the Treasurer was authorized, under the direction of the Board of Selectmen, to borrow the sum of twenty thousand dol- lars ($20,000), at an interest not exceeding five (5) per cent., to be applied to the payment of the existing lia- bilities of the town. A loan was obtained from the " Worcester County Institution for Savings," Worcester, Mass., through the agency of a banking house in Boston, for twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) at four and three- fourths per cent. interest, the principal to be paid in ten years from the twenty-eighth day of May last, by an annual payment of two thousand dollars ($2,000).

Notes to the amount of the sum borrowed have been taken up, for most of which the town was paying eight per cent. interest, the notes mainly being subject to local taxation.

The following statement will show more clearly the practical working of this act of the town. The interest on the loan of $20,000, at four and three-fourths per cent., paying $2,000 of the principal yearly, will amount in ten years, when the whole debt will be paid, to $5,225.00. The same sum, with payments as above at six and three-fourths per cent. interest, after deduct- ing one and one-fourth per cent .- a fair estimated aver- age for taxation-will amount to $7,425.00, making a difference in favor of the town of $2,200.00.

11

The other obligations of the town over the $20,000.00 bear interest as follows, viz: Not subject to taxation in town, at four and three-fourths per cent., $800.00. Sub- ject to local taxation, interest at six per cent., $2,575.00; interest at six and one half per cent., $1,000.00, bringing the whole indebtedness of the town bearing interest, to the smallest fraction over four and three-fourths per cent.

GEORGE T. DAY, BENJ. G. BROOKS, NOAH PRESCOTT,

Selectmen.
