ROADS AND BRIDGES.
By vote of the town, the Selectmen were chosen Highway Sur- veyors, to take charge of the roads and make such repairs and im- provements as their judgment might direct.
Feeling it was important to have the machine worked by a person of experience, we employed Mr. Henry D. Pierce, paying him $35.00 per month and board; and we were well satisfied with his work. One man was paid $15.00 per month and board; the others, $1.25 per day, boarding themselves.
The machine was run nearly three months, costing about $650.00, which has been apportioned as nearly as can be, estimating by the time it worked in each district; although the expenditure appears
66 October, 66
20
more than was really made for the machine itself at the time, for the reason that we have included in the $650.00 (expense of the ma- chine) the cost of keeping the oxen nearly a month [July] after the work on the roads was finished.
We feel that the expense to the Town from damage to the roads, caused by the showers of August 9th, would have been very much larger had it not been for the machine-work done previous to that time; and, had it not been for those showers, our roads would have been in better condition than for many years.
