REPAIRS ON TOWN HOUSE.

At the March Meeting of 1880 the following Article was put in the Warrant :

"To see if the Town will authorize the employment of a com- petent person to examine the Town House and ascertain in what manner it can best be repaired and improved, with an estimate of the expense, the whole information so obtained to be reported at the next Town Meeting." In accordance with the above it was voted to authorize the Selectmen to employ some competent person to ex- amine the Town House with reference to repairs and alterations in the same, and report to the Town as soon as convenient. In compli- ance with the vote the Selectmen consulted with Charles T. Emer- ron, architect, of Lawrence, and reported with plans and estimates at a meeting called for that purpose on the 24th day of March, when the following vote was passed: "Voted, to accept and adopt the report of the Selectmen presenting a plan for repairing and im- proving the Town House, being plan No. 1, which plan contem- plates the erection of a front elevation with a straight roof and an addition of fifteen feet to the rear of the building. And that the Selectmen shall be a Committee to carry out the intention of the Town as expressed in the above vote." The Selectmen accordingly

21

invited proposals from different builders and the contract was awarded to Wm. C. Edwards, one of our townsmen, his proposal being the lowest. The work was done under the general super- vision of the architect, C. T. Emerson. AUDITOR'S REPORT.

LOWELL, MASS., February 19, 1881.

GENTLEMEN - I have examined the books of the Overseers of the Poor including the accounts kept by the Master of the almshouse, for the year 1880-'81, and find the same correctly cast and properly vouched.

I would further state that I have examined the books of the Overseers of the Poor for the year 1879-'80, and find them correctly cast. The error in the printed report for this year (1879-'80) of $100 in the footings of the payments, is simply a clerical one, and does not exist on the books. I proved the accounts in a thorough manner and found them to have been systematically and honestly kept in every particular.
