The number of issues of books is not so large this year as last. This may be readily accounted for from the fact that for about six weeks of the time, in which the Town House was being repaired, the Directors were obliged to remove the books and close the Library.

This gave an opportunity to remodel the shelves. which under the old arrangement had become so crowd- ed as not to afford room for all the books belonging to the Library. By this change, made at small expense in comparison with the good accomplished, sufficient room has been secured for all books that will be added for sev- eral years.

It is now ten years since the books have been cata- logued, although two small supplements have since been printed-the last four years ago. There are now nine hundred and twenty books which appear neither in the catalogue nor supplements, and these being the latest books added are in by far the most demand. This is a cause of much complaint among those who take out books, and in consequence we consider the circulation of the Library is considerably decreased. We recommend, therefore, one hundred and seventy-five dollars to be raised and appropriated for making and printing a new catalogue to supply this demand.

42

The usual wear of the Library causes an annual ex- pense for binding which your directors regret the more as the sum available for the purchase of new books is by so much diminished. Until this year the expense of binding has been included in the town's printing bill, but your Selectmen have decided that they have not the proper authority to continue this expenditure. The amount available for the purchase of new books has been seriously diminished this year from this cause.

We recommend that the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars be raised for the purchase of books the coming year.

Directors of Public Library.
