ROADS AND BRIDGES.

The sum appropriated by the Town, to be expended during the months of April and May, was $1020. But owing to the frequent and rapid rains during the summer months, it has been necessary to expend in several Districts a larger sum than was at first apportioned ; and we

11

believe from careful observation that the roads have been kept in better repair than for many years, and we trust the Town will continue the sys- tem. But we would recommend an appropriation of $1400, $1150 to be expended during the spring and summer months, reserving the balance for winter, as we find upon consultation with the Surveyors that although a majority of the Districts, in their opinion, can be kept in good repair with the same expenditure as the past year, others need more.

Voted by the Town the sum of $1600, which was divided, one-half equally among the Districts and one-half according to the number of scholars, as by vote of the Town, which if divided equally would only give to each scholar the sum of $3.00, the number of scholars being 533, according to the returns of the Assessors.

Would it not be well to increase the amount ?

DIRECTORS' REPORT.

The Directors of the Town Library respectfully present their report for the year ending February, 1868 :-

BOOKS ADDED TO THE LIBRARY :

Volumes purchased, . 59

Presented by Unitarian Association, 12

Received from Review Club, 7

The above figures show a very slight decline in the number of books delivered the past year, which is accounted for by the demand for works of fiction, which has been supplied by another library, and brought weekly to the doors of subscribers during the summer. Your Committee would therefore recommend an appropriation of $100 for the purchase of new books, that the present deficiency may be supplied, by the purchase of the works of Dickens, and other popular authors which are so generally called for.

All of which is respectfully submitted by
