The growth of the Library shows the demand for additional shelves, to which the Directors would call attention. One department is now full, two more nearly so, and one will be made so by the first purchase of books. We would also note the number of books lost. Most of these can be accounted for by various accidents. There are usually several books not returned at the close of each year, but the Directors have never considered them lost until no trace of them could be found. The small number really lost in the past four years shows the course pursued in this matter to be correct.
In order to meet the wants of many of our towns- people, who, living at a distance from the central village, are debarred from enjoying the privileges which the Library affords, the Directors would suggest the employ- ment of one or more persons to visit the various villages and outlying districts, for the purpose of distributing and collecting books. By such an arrangement the useful- ness of the Library would also be much increased.
We thankfully acknowledge the receipt of twenty volumes of a miscellaneous character from Mr. Samuel J. Tilton, a late resident of Westford, two volumes from Mr. George B. Dixwell, three from Mr. Cowley, and twelve numbers of the Unitarian Review from the American Unitarian Association.
A
40
We would also acknowledge our indebtedness during the past year to the same generous hand which has kept the books in repair for the last three years, and saved thereby much expense.
The Directors respectfully ask for an appropriation of one hundred and fifty dollars for the ensuing year.
The appended list includes the purchases of the last year.
ABIEL J.' ABBOT, ELIZA A. BABBITT, ARTHUR WRIGHT, Directors of Public Library.
