HAMMERSTEIN, OSCAR


Theatrical mg'r and operatic impresario; b. Berlin, Germany, 1847; came to U. S., 1863, and worked as cigarmaker, inventing and patenting many labor- saving devices in that industry. In 1868 wrote three 1-act comedies, which were successfully produced at one of the German theatres in N. Y. City; in 1870 began as a theatrical manager; in 1880 built the Harlem Opera House, one of the most beautiful theatres in the world; later built the Columbus Theatre in Harlem, the Manhattan Opera House, which afterward became Koster & Bial's Music Hall, and the Olympic, now the New York Music Hall, which was taken from him by the N. Y. Life Ins. Co. on a mortgage for $900,000; since then he built the Victoria, which he now man- ages; the Belasco Theatre, and the new opera house, the Manhattan Opera House, which in the seasons of 1906-1907, 1907-1908 and 1909-1910 gave grand opera of the highest quality.
