Took active part in enlisting Southern support for Judge Alton B. Parker in securing him Democratic nomination for Presi- deney. In 1899 obtained charter from Commonwealth of Mass. to construct and operate a ship canal across Cape Cod Peninsula, and after preliminary work had been accomplished, enlisted financial support of promi- nent Boston and New York capitalists, and the canal, 8 miles long, 100 feet wide and 25 feet deep at mean low water, Is rapidly approaching completlon, and will doubtless greatly develop the commerce between the two cities.
