Rochester, N. Y., July 25, 1845, William De Kroyft, M.D. Widow on wedding day by carriage accident; awoke blind one month later, entered N. Y. Blind Inst. the next autumn for music, found there a means of writing, and pub- lished first book three years later. In Feb., 1850, went to Washington, D. C., with letters to Senators Seward. Henry Clay, Houston, and others. In March, 1850, left for Charleston, S. C., with letters from these and many others, including one from President Zachary. Taylor at the White House, introducing her to all his friends in the South. The following Christmas, Pres- cott, the historian, presented a case of wires such as he had invented for his own use. Aided by this, she has since published four other books, besides traveling almost constantly over the U.
