Participated in Reconstruction in Miss .; in Washington as witness for some tline before recon- struetlon Congress. Assisted in holding the first elec- tion under reconstruction act. Delegate-at-large to Nat. Conv. held in Chicago, 1868, which nominated Gen. Grant pres., and by that conv. made mem. Nat. Exec. Com .; was also chm'n State Exec. Com. for Miss. In 1873 moved to Denver, Col., was clerk of dist. court, participated In party convs .; organized first joint stock company ever organized to deal in real estate, platted additions and Improved them in many Western States, also engaged in mining, banking, bld'g railroads and farming. Instrumental in establishing beet sugar in- dustry in Colo .; organizing trans-Miss. Congress, also Pan-Am. Bi-Metallic Ass'n, and was pres. of all these org'ns. Made many addresses on economie suhjects before Congress and commercial eonvs. in West, and has written extensively on finance and economic sub- jects. Pres. and dir. Am.
