Wood engraver; b. London, Eng., 1852. Came to U. S. with parents, 1858; m., 1875, Annie Carter. Lived in Chicago, and became, penniless as result of great fire, 1871; removed to N. Y. 1875 and secured employ- ment with the Century (then Scribner's Magazine). Went abroad 1883 to engrave set of blocks after old masters in European galleries; this series was shown in Century Magazine, and later published in book formn; now engaged in making similar set of engrav- ing from masterpieces in Am. galleries. Awarded 1st class gold medal Paris Exp'n, 1900; diploma Chicago Exp'n, 1893; grand prix (only grand prize given for wood engraving), St. Louis Exp'n, 1904.
