Purchased the cruiser Esmeralda from Chile and delivered her to Japan during the Chinese-Japanese War (the only in- cident in history of the delivery of a war vessel to a belligerent); rendered valuable services to U. S. Gov't in purchase of vessels and munitions of war, both be- fore and during the war with Spain; in several in- stances blocked the efforts of the Spaniards to pur- clase foreign war vessels and supplies, and In many ways aided the Gov't by services which were formaily aeknowledged by Seeretary Long. Established in City of Manaos, 1,000 miles up the Amazon River, a mod- ern trolley road, elcetrie light system, waterworks and the asphalt bloek pavement. During Russo-Japanese War was pro-Russian, and at outset of the war pur- chased for the Russian Gov't all the available ordnance and projectiles in the U. S., and bought and shipped to Russia the submarine Protector, five other submarines and ten torpedo boats; had an audience with the Czar; received letters of eredit of Rothschild Fréres of Paris for $30,000,000, and conducted important negotiations preventing the sale of the Argentine and Chllean war vessels to Japan and Turkey. ] During past 15 years has devoted himself largely to the consolidation of in- dustrials, and has suceceded in establishing 39 con- solidations, with an outstanding capitalization of over $346,000,000; he has become widely known as the Father of Trusts.
