City, 1886, as solo 'cellist at Metropolitan Opera House: afterward appeared in same capacity with leading orchestras; when Gilmore died and question of securing a conductor for 23d Reg't Band who .would be a worthy successor of that famous conductor became important, he was chosen as leader, and has held the position twelve years. Was for some time conductor of Pittsburgh Orchestra, and for past few years head of own New York org'n. Author of mally comle operas, including Prince Ananias, The Amecr. Babes in Toyland.
