THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

COMPANY A.

Company "A" was gathered largely by Seth A. Bushnell, a well-to-do farmer living in the town of Hartford, and made up of men from Hartford, Vernon, Kinsman, Bazetta and other towns adjoining. They were many of them young men, and the very pick of a wealthy farm section on the Western Reserve. A large portion of them enlisted at a mass meeting held at Hartford, August 2d, 1861, where the war topics were discussed, and the hearts of young men were fired with the spirit of Wade, Hutchins and Giddings, and their faces set like a flint toward the nation's honor and safety. -

About the middle of August the company gathered at Warren, the county seat of Trumbull county and there, after the sad parting from wives and sweet- hearts, took the train for Cleveland. Eighty-four men were taken to Cleve- land, and there Charles W. Hills, the Cutlers and others from Mayfield. Cuyahoga Co., 16 in all were secured to complete the quota. Organization was effected by the election of S. A. Bushnell of Hartford, Captain; Emerson Opdycke, of Warren, as Ist Lieutenant and James McCleery, of Bazetta, as 2d Lieutenant. C. C. Hart of Hartford was made 1st Sergeant; Augustus D. Druery, of Hartford, 2d Sergeant; Elmer Moses, of Hartford, 3d Sergeant; Seward S. Palmer, 4th Sergeant; Charles Gallup, 5th Sergeant.

The company took part in all the battles with the regiment from Shiloh. April 6th and 7th, 1862, to Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 15th and 16th, 1864, and in skirmishes without number. It had enrolled during the war 165 men. There were killed in action three corporals, Ames, Braden and Smith, and seven privates. Twenty-one died of wounds and disease; two were taken prisoners and never heard of. The officers when mustered out Nov. 27, 1865, at Columbus, were Captain. Seward S. Palmer; 1st Lieut., P. A. Bower. The non- commissioned officers were: 1st Sergt., Andrew C. Parker; 2d Sergt., Joseph Jackson; 3d Sergt., Geo. F. Haynes; 4th Sergt., Charles Settle: 5th Sergt .. Sheldon Crooks. Corporals: Daniel I. Holcomb, Sullivan D. Ralph, Alfred J. Henry, Isaac A. Gamber, Adolphus Flint. The former officers were: Captains S. A. Bushnell, Emerson Opdycke, James McCleery; 1st Lieuts .. Opdycke, McCleery, Hart, Fuller, McMahon, Palmer; 2d Lieuts., McCleery. Hart, Fuller and Charles W. Hills. Of the 165 men only five came home with- out a wound of some sort to stand as evidence of their prowess at the front during the whole war. They were never a day on any detached service, or left in the rear at some stockade, but always at the front. The company holds its record second to none.
