COMPANY B.

COMPANY B.

This company was originally recruited from Geauga county farmers, gen- erally consisting of young men from sixteen to twenty-three years of age. It was originally organized at Burton, Geauga county, on the 20th day of August, 1861.

General Hazen, in his "Narrative of Military Service," published in 1885, has the following to say of the nucleus of the 41st Ohio, and the organization of Company B, which had started out under the name of "The Hitchcock Guards:"

"The Forty-first Ohio, when I joined it, was recruiting rapidly. It had its inception in Geauga county, under the immediate care and patronage of the Hon. Peter Hitchcock, of Burton, a widely and most honorably known citizen. Three young men, Elias A. Ford (nephew of the late Governor Sea- bury Ford), Henry W. Johnson and Lester T. Patchin, were the nucleus. They went from village to village, and from neighborhood to neighborhood, with the old flag flying, to the step of fife and drum, and the first company was soon enrolled, as the result of their good work. Patchin was killed in one of the early battles. Ford was shot at Stone River, but recovered, and is a well-known railroad man in Pittsburg. Johnson was my efficient quar- termaster in the war. He afterward declined a commission in the regular army, and is now a manufacturer at Michigan City."

General Hazen has stated the matter correctly, except that there were four others who stepped to the front with Ford, Johnson and Patchin, when the President first called for three-year volunteers, and their names were Chauncey H. Talcott, Henry Hotchkiss, James B. Cleveland and Martin Taylor. These seven were the organizers of Company B, in conjunction with the most valuable services of the Hon. Peter Hitchcock, and enrolled the first company around which the 41st Ohio Regiment was formed at Camp Wood.

Company B participated in all of the battles in which the 41st was en- gaged, and carried an honorable record through them all.

From first to last the company had 141 men on its rolls. It lost, in killed in battle and died of wounds, 16 men; died of disease, 19; drowned, 1. Fif- teen were mustered out at expiration of term of service, before the close of the war, and 19 veterans were mustered out after the war ended.
