COMPANY H.
COMPANY H.
The enlistment of Company "H," 41st Regt., O. V. I., was begun at Oberlin, Lorain county, about the middle of August, 1861. Capt. Alonzo H. Pease, a resident of that place, had organized and commanded a company of Ohio militia and acquired a little knowledge of military affairs in that service. About the first of August, 1861, he determined to enter the service, and suggested to John W. Steele that he join in raising a company. At this time a regiment was being formed at Jefferson, Ashtabula county, Ohio, called after the Hon. Joshua R. Giddings "The Giddings Regiment." It was finally agreed between us that we should try to raise a company in Lorain county for this regiment, to be called the "Lorain Guards." Enlistment rolls were procured and without further authority the enlistment of the company was undertaken. Several men from Oberlin and Pittsfield signed these rolls, but learning that such enlistment was illegal, or at least informal, the work was suspended until, on proper application, authority was granted September 4th, 1861, to Capt. Pease, to form a company for the +1st Regt., O. V. I. The men who had already enlisted signed the new rolls and the effort to fill the company was pushed in Lorain and adjoining counties. Meetings were held in Pittsfield, Huntington and Camden, of Lorain county, and in Wakeman, Huron county. The Hon. James Monroe and Prof. Henry E. Peck, of Oberlin College, addressed these meetings and rendered valuable assistance in the matter of recruiting. Ebenezer Kingsburry and Albert McRoberts, of Pittsfield, Capt. Alonzo Pease and John W. Steele, of Oberlin, Lorain county, and William H. Pierce, of Wakeman, Huron county, were among the most active in securing enlistments. Within ten days from the receipt of authority to enlist, fifty-two men had joined the company and were or- dered to rendezvous at Oberlin. Monday, Sept. 16, 1861, prepared to join the regiment at Camp Wood, Cleveland, Ohio. In pursuance to this order, the company (fifty-two in all) reported at Oberlin during the forenoon of the 16th. The people of the town gave them a hearty reception. Dinner was given at the Palmer House; patriotic addresses were made by the leading citizens, and at one o'clock p. m. the company formed and marched to the Lake Shore depot. boarded the train, and amid cheers and other demonstra- tions of good will, accompanied by several friends, they started for Camp Wood, where they arrived at 4 o'clock p. m.
The regiment, then numbering about 500 men, Col. W. B. Hazen com- manding, was drawn up to receive them. They were mustered in, and marched to their quarters under escort of Company "A." Their tents were
228

already pitched and, after being assigned to quarters and baggage disposed of, supper was prepared and the company with its guests joined in their first meal as soldiers. Soon after Capt. Pease formed the company, three cheer- were given for the departing friends and then the company retired for their first night in military service. On the morning of the 17th of September the company by unanimous vote elected Alonzo H. Pease, Captain, who soon after appointed non-commissioned officers and the company entered on their duties as soldiers.
About the 10th of October the enrollment exceeded eighty men. The company then elected John W. Steele, 1st Lieut. and Albert McRoberts, 2d Lieut. On the 29th of October the company (three commissioned officers and eighty-three enlisted men) was mustered into the U. S. service by James P. W. Neill, 1st. Lieut., 18th U. S. Infantry. Five new recruits were received in October, 1862, and eleven in the month of February, 1864. making a total of ninety-nine enlisted men who served with Company H during the war.
Probably not far from 75 per cent. of the enlisted men were farmers: fifteen per cent. mechanics, and the remainder were of various other pur- suits. They were mostly descendants from New England stock who settled the Western Reserve. They were fairly well educated, industrious, honest and thrifty. Most of them enlisted from a patriotic sense of duty. Many of them were connected with protestant denominational churches and were zealous in their religious beliefs. Soon after their enlistment they organized weekly religious services and kept this organization up throughout their term of enlistment. As a characteristic of the company: Soon after entering Camp Wood the majority of its members drew up a written remonstrance against profanity among the officers of the regiment. This remonstrance was written in moderate language and rather in the tone of a petition than of a complaint. A committee was appointed. who presented the remon- strance to the Colonel. They were told that such action was subversive of military discipline and were not a little surprised at the spirit in which the petition was received; they, however, ventured the remark that profanity was not only in violaton of the commandment, but also a violation of the United States regulations for the army. The company was known as the praying company, and many new recruits received after going to Camp Wood, attracted by these sterling qualities, enlisted in this company. The average age of the men was about twenty-seven years.
From a letter just received from Capt. Horatio P. Kile, who commanded the company twenty months, I clip the following: "The men of Company H were as a whole, as grand, noble and brave a lot of men as could be mus- tered in a company organization in any community, therefore to its survivor- descendants and friends is due a recognition of their worth and work."
