THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

COMPANY E.

During July, 1861, F. D. Stone and W. J. Morgan began recruiting a company in Cleveland. On the 17th of August Captain Stone received or- ders from the Adjutant General of the state of Ohio to march his company to an unbroken field, which afterward became "Camp Wood." The company proving to have only sixty men, it could go into camp with only a 1st Lieu- tenant. W. J. Morgan, being the prospective Lieutenant, got the men to- gether and marched them out to the field, climbed over the fence, and went into camp, aligned the men in proper order, and solemnly swore them into the service of the United States; and by previous instruction or intimation. named the field "Camp Wood." They remained in camp that day, with James McMahon acting as 1st Sergeant. At sunset Morgan mustered the company and gave them permission to go to their homes for the night, with strict injunctions to report in the morning for roll-call, which was faithfully done. During this day, Acting Quartermaster Sergeant W. S. Blythe re- ported to Lieut. Morgan with carpenters, lumber, etc. Result, a building. and before night loads of bread, meat, coffee, sugar, etc., and Blythe dealt out rations in good military form. Recruits were constantly added to the company, and in a few days, other companies carre into the camp. Lieut. Morgan's company being now about complete in numbers, at least to the minimum, F. D. Stone was made Captain and took charge of the company; W. J. Morgan, First Lieutenant; Harry Jones, Second "Principal Orna- ment," as he, called it; Ab Virgil, First Sergeant. Sergeant McMahon was given to Capt. Pease' Oberlin company (H) as First Sergeant. Pease wanted a man of McMahon's experience, and McMahon deemed his chances better in H company.

During its service the company lost nine men killed in action, six died of wounds, and only three of disease. Three of the killed in action were at Shiloh, and three others died of wounds received there.
