THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

COMPANY D

This company was recruited in Cleveland, though many of the men came from the country southward, notably from Bedford and its vicinity. The company contained both town and country men. James H. Cole, Harvey E. Proctor and Robert L. Kimberly were among those concerned in raising the company, and were made its first officers. It had an unusual number of young men of medium stature, trim and solid, and bright in in- tellect. The company lost heavily in the earlier battles, and during the greater part of the term of service was not strong in numbers. Its dead count 25, three-fifths of them by wounds, the others by disease. One of its members, Edward W. Kelley, was left on the field of Chickamauga, wounded and died of starvation in Andersonville prison pen. Four of the six killed in action were at Pickett's Mills, and two others. died of wounds received there.
