THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

COMPANY I.

When the first call for volunteers was made in April, 1861, a full com- pany of 100 men was formed in Port Clinton, Ottawa county, but so many companies were being offered to the government at the time that the Port Clinton company could not find a place in any regiment, and it was finally disbanded. But a few men, who afterwards formed the nucleus of Company "I," kept together, and about the 1st of September, 1861, organ- ized a new company which became Company "I" of the 41st , Ohio. John Mitchell was elected Captain; John H. Williston, 1st Lieutenant, and Wm. Rymers, 2d Lieutenant. When the company arrived in Cleveland Col. Hazen refused to recommend Mitchell for a commission as Captain and made Williston Captain; Rymers, Ist Lieutenant, and W. M. Beebe, (not of the company) 2d Lieutenant. Mitchell served in the ranks as private until March 1, 1862, when he was commissioned 2d. Lieutenant.

The rejection of John Mitchell was as great a mistake as Hazen made in the whole work of organization. Mitchell's record in all grades up to captain abundantly vindicated him. There was no more reliable, sturdy and faithful soldier in the regiment.

The company lost thirteen killed in action, four died of wounds. and eighteen died of disease. Four of the killed in action were at Shiloh, and three a Pickett's Mills.
