THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

The Regimental Roster as shown on pages 137 to 264, is taken from the "Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio, in the War of the Rebellion, 1861 to 1865," Volume 4, published 1887.

A number of names omitted there have been added, and many errors have been corrected by individuals and by company reports made while this history was in preparation.

The Roll of Honor on pages 265 to 291, was prepared by Col. E. S. Holloway. Here again corrections and additions, not a few, have been made. Every effort has been made to render the Roster and Roll of Honor as complete as possible, and if any errors are found, they are due to the fact that 33 years after the close of the war, and the loss of company and regi- mental records in the collision on the river at Cairo, Ills., in June, 1865, it is not possible to get the history of every one of our 1472 men, and that the official records are not always accurate.

The company histories preceding each company in the Roster were furnished by the following persons, who were original members of the company : Company A, S. S. Palmer ; Company B, E. A. Ford ; Company C, Aquila Wiley ; Company D, R. L. Kimberly ; Company E, W. J. Morgan ; Company F, R. A. Gault ; Company G, Silo P. Warriner ; Company H, J. W. Steele ; Company I, W. S. Miller ; Company K, James Horner. Any discrepancies between their statements and the roster of the companies as given, is probably due to the fact that they were necessarily made without having access to the official records.

On a general summing up we find this Regiment traveled during the service 14,500 miles : 5,200 by water, 3,800 by rail and 5,500 on foot. Was engaged in 20 battles, besides a great many skirmishes. Lost, 109 killed in battle, 69 died of wounds, 141 died of disease, and 3 killed by accidents ; total, 322 deaths. There were 616 wounded that are known, and a great many more were slightly wounded, of which there is no record.
