COMPANY K.

The tenth company, "K," was organized in Camp Wood, in October, 1861. James Horner, who had served in the regular army, enlisted in "A" company at Camp Wood, Aug. 26, and was soon detailed by Col. Hazen as a drillmaster, and served as such until the beginning of October. Then he was given a furlough of several days, and went to Vienna, Trumbull county, where he enlisted ten men. With these he returned to Camp Wood. This was the beginning of the tenth company. C. D. Gaylord, of Cleveland, brought several men to Horner, and engaged in recruiting for the company. The recruits were sent out, and brought other men, until about sixty had been secured. About the end of October, Wm. Goodsell came in with six- teen men, and these with a few transfers from the stronger companies, made the minimum of eighty-four for the company, and on the 29th of October it was mustered. Wm. Goodsell was Captain; James Horner, First Lieu- tenant; Charles D. Gaylord, Second Lieutenant.

During its term of service the company lost three men killed in action, six who died of wounds, and fifteen who died of disease. Two of the killed in action were at the battle of Pickett's Mills, where the company went in with eleven men, and all but two were killed or wounded.
