THE FORTY-FIRST OHIO INFANTRY.

COMPANY C.

Company "C" was recruited in September, 1861, at Wooster, Wayne County, by Captain Aquila Wiley, who had served as Captain of Company "C" of the 16th Regiment, in the three months' service. At the time it was raised, commissions had been issued to citizens of the county to raise five other companies for the 16th Regiment, for three years service, and a camp of rendezvous was established at Wooster for that reg. iment. The men who had served in Company "C" of the 16th divided up. some of them receiving commissions in the new companies author- ized to be raised for the 16th regiment. This made recruiting for Wiley's company slower than it would have been under other circumstances. On September 19th it proceeded to Camp Wood at Cleveland, with three officers and seventy-five enlisted men. The remainder of the com- pany joined a week or two afterward. The following extract from a letter of Captain Wiley to the Wooster Republican will recall some of the incidents connected with the arrival at Camp Wood. The letter was dated September 23, 1861, and speaks of the kindness of the Wooster people while the company was forming, and of the enthusiastic greetings at railway sta- tions on the way to Cleveland. Of the reception there, Capt. Wiley wrote:

"We reached Euclid street station about 61/2 o'clock, P. M., and marched from there to camp. When we reached the camp, we found all the troops drawn up in open ranks at the entrance, to receive and welcome us. The Major conducted us to our quarters, tents having been pitched for our use. One of the companies prepared supper for us, carried down our blankets and camp equipage from the Quartermaster's building, and before 9 o'clock we had our supper and were in our tents, many of us comfortably enjoying our first night's sleep in camp.

We are all well pleased with the neatness, cleanliness, order and dis- cipline of our camp. I may some other time try to give you an idea of what system and order can accomplish for the comfort and convenience of troop, in camp.

Messrs. Schuckers, Lightner and Miller accompanied us with their mar- tial music, contributing thereby greatly to the pleasure of the company, and of the crowds who met us at the station. We shall remember them kindly."

The following is a list of those who were killed, or died of wounds re- ceived in action:
