COMPANY G.

G company, as well as B, was enlisted in Geauga county-G mostly from the townships of Hampden, Huntsburg, Claridon and Munson. Hampden contributed more than thirty men to the company. There were fourteen pairs of brothers in the company. There were no cities or large towns in the county, and most of the men were from the farms, and somewhat larger in stature than the average in the regiment. The company was recruited mainly by Martin H. Hamblin, who served in the Mexican war, and was also in the three months service of the 19th Ohio. While recruiting, the company was known as the Geauga Zouaves, and at first it was expected to go to the 29th Ohio, Col. Lewis P. Buckley, who was Major of the 19th Ohio. B company of the Forty-first-known locally as the Hitchcock Guards-had just been enlisted in the county, and many men had gone to other regiments; but in about twenty days there were eighty men for G company. The company was gathered in Chardon, and about Sept. 10th it left for Camp Wood, escorted by the Claridon Martial Band. At the Cleveland railroad station the company was met by the Hitchcock Guards (B company) and escorted to camp. At this time the company had only about eighty men, but it was soon filled to the maximum. Martin H. Ham- blin was chosen Captain; Zelotus Sisson, First Lieutenant, and Horatio P. Kile, Second Lieutenant.

The company lost, during its service, thirteen killed in action, five died of wounds and eighteen died of disease. Four of the killed were at Pickett's Mills, seven at Chickamauga and two at Stone River. Fifteen of the dead of the company are buried in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, and one lies in the cemetery at Indianola, Tex.
