The gathering of Obituaries in book form was compiled throught the efforts of the Clan Diggers Genealogical Society of the Kern River Valley, with the permission of the publishers of the 'Kern Valley Sun' newspaper. We would like to express our appreciation to these publishers for their cooperation, without which we could never have started this project.

Mamie F. Hendricks


Memorial services were held Thursday, November 17, 1994 at the Library in Lake Isabella for Mamie F. Hendricks of Lake Isabella. Mamie was born August 17, 1913 in St. Joseph, Missouri and passed away November 9, 1994 in Mt. Mesa.


Mamie was married to Steve Hendricks in 1932 and had 49 years together until he passed away in 1981. She was a clerk at the U.S. Post Office in San Jose for 20 years before retiring in 1978. Mamie was a member of the NARF, Senior Nutrition, the Clan Diggers and the NSDAR.


She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Alice and Cecil Dale of Lake Isabella; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Judy Hendricks of ML. View, Calif .; also many neices and nephews and grand neices and grand nephews. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary


NSDAR


The Kawaiisu chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a memorial service for Mamie Hendricks on Nov 17 at the Library in Lake Isabella. The service was presented by Marian Adkins, Regent. Attending the service were her sister, Alice and Cecil Dale of Lake Isabella and family; brother-in-law John and Marie Hendricks of Mt. View, Calif., and family; and three neices, Mamme and Mike Markieviez of Albuquerque, N.M. and family, Janet and Robert Gibson of San Jose and family, and Cherrie Rubnankara and son of Sacramento. Also present were many friends and members of the NARF, Clan Diggers, NSDAR, and Senior Nutrition. Mamie was a charter member of the Senior Nutrition organization. Nadelle Getting announced that Mamie's name would be placed on a plaque at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella. Mamie was an active and faithful member of our chapter. The offices she held in four years as a member were Chaplain, Registrar, Lineage Research, Membership and press book chairman. During the memorial service red, white, and blue carnations were placed by our members. The hall was decorated in red, white, and blue. Refreshments were served by Phyllis Piper and Marge Laskowski.

RAYMOND K. BAUCH


A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 31 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Raymond K. Bauch of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Hugh Jeffrey of the Church of Christ, Lake Isabella. Mr. Bauch passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on Dec. 27. He is survived by his wife Alice Merle Bauch of Lake Isabella; son Richard K. Bauch, living in Germany; daughter Joan Price of Lake Isabella, Sandra Monteith also of Lake Isabella; 8 grandchildren. Born Jan 7, 1920 in Marlow, Oklahoma, Raymond Kenneth Bauch was 66,

ARTHUR SHAMBLIN


A funeral service was conducted Friday, Dec. 26 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel In Lake Isabella for Arthur Shamblin of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. Francis Edge of the Bodfish Pentecostal Church.


Mr. Shamblin passed away Dec. 21 at home in Bodfish.


He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lucille of Bodfish; daughter Jean Shamblim of Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada; sons Jack and Buster Shamblin both of Bodfish; six grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Arthur Shamblin was a member of the Bodfish Pentecostal Church of God.


Born Oct. 5, 1911 in Seligman, Barry County, Missouri, Arthur Shamblin was 75.

HERBERT LEE HERRING


Graveside services were held Dec. 30 at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Herbert Lee Herring,76, who died Dec. 26 in Bakersfield.


Mr. Herring was born in Arkansas on Jan. 25, 1910. He moved to Oklahoma as a child, living there several years until he moved to California. He and his surviving wife, Ruby Irene enjoyed 46 years of marriage.


Other survivors include one sister Bonnie Touth; three neices; one nephew; 14 great grandchildren and five grandchildren.


Mr. Herring will be remembered as a very devoted loving person who did many deeds for all his family and friends.

ERNEST R. HAILEY


A funeral service was conducted' Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Ernest R. Hailey of Wofford Heights.


Officiating was Rev. David Snow, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Lake Isabella. Mr. Hailey passed away in Bakersfield at the San Joaquin Community Ilospital.


He is survived by his wife, Claudia of Wofford Heights; sons John and llerbert Hailey, both of California; daughters Caroline Hailey of Santa Barbara, Janet Lammen of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Verna Hailey of Pasadena, Maryann Stubly of Santa Ana, Myretta Alcorn of Bodfish; one brother Bill Hailey of California; sisters Margaret Randolph of Mission Viejo, BVess Lynch of Amarillo, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren.


Ernest llailey ws a U.S. Army Veteran of WW 11 who served in northern France, Central Europe and the Rhineland. lle was retired from Firestone Tire Co and was a member of the Moose.


Born Aug. 15, 1918 in Crowder, Oklahoma, Ernest Raymond Hailey was 68.

PATRICIA J. O'REAMER


Patricia O'Reamer of Pala Ranches passed away Dec. 18 at Kern Valley Hospital.


She is survived by her husband of 31 years Donald Patrick O'Reamer of Pala Ranches; daughter Robir Singer of West Hollywood; sons James P. O'Reamer of Wofford Heights, Thomas Gettys, Dale, Allen and John McMann all of Washington; nine grandchildren and one great- grandchild.


Born Oct. 3, 1919 in Tacoma, Washington, Patricia Jean O'Reamer was 67.

JEANETTE NORMAN


A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern River Valley Cemetery for Jeanette Norman of Lake Isabella on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Mrs. Norman passed away Jan. 17 at the Kern Valley Hospital. Officiating at the funeral service was Rev. Duane Splawn, pastor of Kern Christian Church of Southlake. Jeanette is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jack of Lake Isabella; Jeff of Wofford Heights; daughters Jill Coleck of Lake Isabella, Jodi Weghorst of Lake Isabella; brother Ed Lynch of California; sister Jean Haas of Inglewood; niece Pam Crothy of Bakersfield and five grandchildren. Jeanette and her husband were owners-operators of the Mountain Hardware in Lake Isabella. Born Oct. 29, 1931 in Inglewood, California, Jeanette Norman was 55. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

FRANK ALLARD


A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Frank L. Allard of Bodfish. Officiating will be officers of Kern Valley Moose Lodge No. 498 Loyal Order of the Moose, of which Mr. Allard was a member.


Mr. Allard passed away Jan. 18 in Bakersfield. lle is survived by his wife of 43 years, Velma of Bodfish; daughters Nancy Abbott of Baldwin, Missouri, Gerri Smith of Cypress, sister Neva Ravelli of Patterson, CA; brothers Edward of Lake Isabella, Robert of Rosemead and Richard of Baldwin Park, 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.


Mr. Allard was a member of the Moose, Eagles and Elks. He was retired from Southern Pacific Transportation Co, where he served as a locomotive engineer in the Los Angeles Division for 40 yers. He was active in the Bodfish Beamers. He will be remembered by the bottle collecting club as their past president and will be remembered by the KRV Moose as their "Papa Postman."


Born Feb. 10, 1917 in Los Angeles, Frank Leroy Allard was 69.

F. ANNE WESTAPHER


A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Lake Isabella for Florence Anne Westapher of Mt. Mesa. Mrs. Westapher passed away Jan. 17 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital.


Officiating at the memorial service will be Rev. Wayne Beebe, pastor of Shepherd of the Hills. Music will be by Rev. James Lee.


Mrs. Westapher is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Standage of Mt. Mesa; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Richard and Diane Standage of Simi Valley; brother Fred Holmes of Denver; sister Inez Hauser of Ft. Collins, Colorado; three grandchildren and one great grandson and one niece and nephew.


Born Feb. 1, 1899 in Yorktown, Iowa, F. Anne Westapher was 87. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary .

BETTY TANNER


Barbette "Betty" Tanner of Weldon passed away Jan. 16 at her residence. She is survived by her husband Louie L. Tanner of Weldon; brother- in-law, Bob Tanner of Wofford Heights.


Mrs. Tanner had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past nine years. Born March 12, 1909 in Henrietta, Oklahoma, Barbette "Betty" Emerald Tanner was 77. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

GLADYS HOPE DAVIS


A graveside service was held at the Kern River Valley cemetery for


Gladys Hope Davis. Officiating was pastor Huston Green of the Weldon Methodist Church.


Gladys was born June 3, 1908 in Bebe, Texas and was a resident of Onyx for the past 14 years. She died Jan. 21 in Bakersfield.


Gladys is survived by her brothers; Glynn Littlefield of Onyx, Staton Littlefield of Kernville; three nephews and one niece.


Mrs. Davis was a member of the Weldon Methodist Church,


South Fork Womens Club and the Historical Society.


Gladys Hope Davis was 78 years. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


ROSSWELL O. RANKIN


A graveside funeral service was held for Rosswell Orten Rankin at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth on Jan. 15. Officiating was Dr. Dale Scott, Pastor of the Faith Evangelical Church of Chatsworth.


Mr. Rankin was born Aug. 19, 1906 in Ridgeway, Missouri and died Jan. 11 in Mt. Mesa.


Mr. Rankin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Geraldine Rankin of Kernville; daughters Judith Murdoc, of Chatsworth, Janis Loritz of Chatsworth; sisters Lela Kain of North Hollywood, Wilda Belt of Kansas, Carol Nelson of Kansas and five grandchildren.

WESLEY F. NEU


A private memorial service was held for Wesley Francis Neu on Thursday, Jan. 22 at his residence. Officiating was Bishop Dennis Ilinkey of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.


Mr. Neu was born Jan. 11, 1908 in Seward, Nebraska and died Jan. 20 in Mt. Mesa.


Hle is survived by his wife of 48 yers, Violet Neu of Mt. Mesa; son James M. Neu of Lake Isabella; daughter Jaquelyn Rauscher of Garden Grove; four granddaughters and one geat- grandchild.


He was a resident of the Kern valley for the past four years and a 40 year resident of Bakersfield. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

THORNIE THORNTON


A funeral service was conducted Wednesday, Jan. 28 at the Kern River Valley cemetery in Wofford lleights for Reppard F. "Thornie" Thornton of Bodfish, formerly of Trona. Mr. Thornton passed away Jan. 26 at Kern Valley Ilospital in Mt. Mesa.


Officiating at the funeral were officers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Trona, assisted by VFW of the Kern Valley and the Elks lodge of Trona assisted by the Kern Valley Elks Lodge.


Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife, Lucille of Bodfish; daughter Leann Gore


of Inyokern; stepdaughters Anna Sue Eldridge of Trona, Bessie Wiles of Midway City ; sons Kenneth and Kerry Thornton both of Trona; sisters Janice Harris of Jesup, Georgia and Maxine Porfilio of Erie, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Lauretta Heidelberger of Charleston, South Carolina, Justin Eldridge of San Diego, Chimene Eldridge of Lake Isabella, Cindy Greenwood of Nashville, TN., Alan Wiles of San Bernardino; great-grandchildren Victoria Heidelberger of Charleston, S.C., and Kelly Greenwood of Nashville.


Thornie Thornton was a life member of the VF'W, a member of the Elks and a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War.


Born Jan. 11, 1933 in Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia, Reppard Fentris Thornton was 54.

ESTHER V. OATES


A funeral service was conducted graveside Feb. 5 at the Green Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, San Pedro for Esther V. Oates of Bella Vista Tract, Weldon. Officiating was a priest of the Catholic Dioces of Los Angeles.


Mrs. Oates passed away at home on Jan. 31.


She is survived by her sister and brother in law, Virginia and John Andrews of Bella Vista; nephew Michael Andrews of Redondo Beach, niece Jona Huefe of Los Angeles. Mrs. Oates is preceded in death by her husband, Royal Walter Oates.


Born Feb. 9, 1909 in Caddo County, Oklahoma, Esther Verena Oates was 77.

OMER B. KOENIG


A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, Feb. 2 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for Omer B. Koenig of Wofford Heights. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish.


Mr. Koenig passed away Jan. 30 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield.


He is survived by his father William Koenig, Sr., Arizona; wife Dolores of Wofford Heights; brothers William J. Koenig of Ohio, Julian C. Koenig of Ohio, Adrian F. Koenig, also of Ohio; sisters Gemma Koenig of Arizona, Dorothy Koenig of Arizona and Viola G. Koenig of Arizona.


Omer Koenig was a meber of the Knights of Columbus, Elks and an 18 year resident of the Kern Valley. During WW II he served with the U.S. Army.


Born Jan. 20, 1923 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Omer Bernard Koenig was 64. Interment at Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


TED PAUL JACKSON


A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery in Bakersfield on Wednesday, Feb. 4 for Ted Paul Jackson, 59, of Weldon. Officiating was Rev. Robbie Robinson of the Southern Baptist Church of Weldon.


Mr. Jackson passed away Jan. 31 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


Hle is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jeanette E. Jackson of Weldon; brother Bob Jackson of Kentucky; sisters Jenny Goodman of Kentucky, Elsie Cornelious of Kentucky; brothers Eddie of Colorado and James of California.


Ted Paul Jackson had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past ten years.

PATRICK H. DEEMS


A funeral service was conducted Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Patrick H. Deems of Weldon. Officating were officers of KRV Moose Lodge No. 498 L.O.O.M. Mr. Deems passed away Jan, 29, the victim of a motor vehicle accident in Onyx.


Hle is survived by his father Max Paul Deems of Sacramento; mother Barbara Atchison of Kernville; fiancee Josephine "Cookie' Naccarato of Mt. Mesa; brothers Michael Ray of Weldon, Raymond of Florida, Jimmy of Bakersfield; sister Janie Larson of Kernville; son Shawn of Bakersfield; son Eric of Sacramento and daughter, Christine of Bakersfield.


Patrick Deems was retired from the U.S. Army where he served in the Republic of Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic and gunner.


As a result of combat service in Vietnam, specialist 4th class Patrick H. Deems was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with bronze stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.


He was a member of the KRV Moose I odge and resident of the Kern Valley for the past three years.


Born Oct. 20, 1947 in Bakersfield, Patrick Herman "Pat" Deems was 40.

ALMA J. POWELL


A private memorial service was held for Alma Julianna Powell at the residence of her daughter Charleen Giffing of Oakland on Jan. 31. Officiating was Rev. Joe E'. Schruhl of Zion Lutheran Church in Piedmont.


Alma was born Sept. 9, 1901 on her parent's homestead near Enderlin, North Dakota. She died Jan. 28 at her daughter's home in Oakland.


She is survived by daughters Charleeen Griffing; Nancy Zulich of Bodfish; sons Chandler Cowden of Washington, D.C., Thornas Cow den of Riverside; sisters Laura Babey of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Cecilia Oliphant of Fargo, North Dakota, Gertrude Grieve of St. Helena, CA; and brother Leo l'ernow of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.


Alma was a rneniber of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in .ake Isabella. A local artist and poet, she had exhibited her paintings frequently in the Los Angeles area and was a resident of the Kern Valley since 1981.


Memorial fund has been set up at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Lake Isabella.


GEORGE A. CATO, JR.


Services were held Jan. 31 at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Mt. Mesa for George A. Cato, Jr. who died Jan. 10 in Ely, Nevada.


Mt. Cato was born June 6, 1954 in Walla Walla, Washington.


Ile is survived by his father George Cato and mother Dorothy Cato of Weldon; brother Dewayne Cato of Nevada and sister Connie Babcock of Seatle.

LESLIE (Gene) TOWNSEND


Funeral services were held Feb. 4 in the Chapel of the Roses at Mish Funeral Home in Oildale for Eugene (Gene) Leslie Townsend, 72, of Weldon who died Feb. 1 in a Bakersfield hospital after a short illness.


The Mt. Mesa Church of Christ will be in charge of the services and cremation followed in the Mish Funeral Ilorne Crematorium and his ashes will be buried in the Kernville Cemetery at a later date.


Mr. Townsend was a native of Illinois and was born Sept. 25, 1914 and had lived in Weldon for the past 18 years. He was a painter for 10 years before his retirement from the City of los Angeles.


He was a member of the Mt. Mesa Church of Christ, the Kern Valley Sideband CB club and Moose Lodge No. 498 at Lake Isabella.


Ile is survived by his beloved wife, Francis A. Townsend of Weldon; step children, Meredith Pelps of Shafter, Brenda Martin of Buttonwillow, Jeanelle Reitz of Las Vegas, and Arnold B. Tanner of Kingston, Washington; sister Dorothy Mae Morgan of St. Louis, Missouri and 8 step-grandchildren.


The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Mt. Mesa Church of Christ, P.O. Box 1090, Lake Isabella.

JAMES M. COKER


Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church for James Monroe Coker, 64, of Kernville, who died Feb. 7 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield following a short illness. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 in Little Elm, Texas


James was born Nov. 29, 1922 in Little Elm, Texas to James Robert and Lousie Adair Coker. He was raised in the area of Denton and Austin, Texas. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 17. While in the service to his country, he made nine landings under fire on various islands in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The last year of his enlistment, he met Hielen Robb, and they were married in 1946.


The couple moved to Texas where their four children were born. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in education and Masters Degree in History from the University of Texas. He took his first teaching position in Ozona, Texas in 1954. While in Ozona, he learned to fly and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In 1958 he brought his family to the Kern River Valley where he taught and was Director of Education at Camp Owen's Boys Camp for 15 years. After, he taught at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest before retiring in 1983.


He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, James L. Coker of Bakersfield; daughters Louanna Banducci of Bakersfield; Terri Ashcraft of Oregon; Sherri Mitchell of Tehachapi; sisters, Lorene Sturdevant, Evelyn Cauthen and Rosemarie Waggoner all of Texas and 9 grandchildren.

WALLACE TICE


Wallace Tice died Saturday, Jan. 31 at his home In Alturas, California. Mr. Tice was the Kern County Building Inspector for the Lake Isabella area for 16 years and was well known here. On his retirement, he moved to Alturas where he made his home for the past 542 years.


He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Alturas, his sons John Tice of Lake Isabella and James Hargrove of Alturas and his daughter Jarrell Dcane Ryan of Alturas.

WILLARD H. MURRAY


A funeral service was conducted Feb. 13 at the Committal Chapel of the Kern River Valley cemetery In Wofford Heights for Willard H. Murray of Kernville. Officating were officers of KRV Masonic Lodge No. 827. Mr. Murray passed away Feb. 10 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He Is survived by his wife, Wanda of Kernville; son Richard of Canoga Park; daughter Linda Toothman of Simi Valley; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


WLlard Murray was retired from Feliz Chevrolat in Los Angeles, where he served as fleet sales manager. He was a Master Mason for 40 years.


During WW U private Willard H. Murrary served as a combat infantry rideman with Company B of the 327th Engineers Battalion. He fought in the Central European campaign and the Battle of the Rhineland during 1944 and 1945.


Born Oct. 1, 1907 in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana, Willard Henry Murray was 79.


Interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

John T. Clark of Wofford Heights passed away Feb. 14 at Kern Valley Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Amelia of Wofford Heights.


Born March 10, 1919 in Arkansas, John T. Clark was 67 years.

GOLDIE L. BRADSHAW


Goldie Bradshaw of Lake Isabella passed away Feb. 18 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. She is survived by her husband Gabriel Bradshaw of Lake Isabella; son Harold; daughter Ritta Anderson and Gloria Washington; brothers Charles and Clyde whalin; sisters Lavem Holder and Elsle Johnson.


Goldie Bradshaw was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past five years.


Born Nov. 19, 1928 in Kentucky, Goldie L. Bradshaw as 58 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


ROBERT J. WALTERS


A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Robert J. Walters of Lake Isabella, Mr. Walters passed away Feb. 22 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his sons Robert of Bell Gardens, Charles of Kernville, daughters Alice Wind of Kernville, Ruth Hackerott of Gardena, Joyce Walters of Kemville; five brothers and five sisters and grandchildren.


Born April 18, 1924 in Indiana, Robert Joseph Walters was 82.

OBITUARY


LORETTA J. BAILEY


A memorial service was conducted Thursday, l'eb. 26 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Loretta Bailey of Bodfish. Officiating was Rev. Wayne Beebe, Pastor of the Shepherd of the llills Lutheran Church.


Mrs. Bailey passed away Feb. 23 at Memorial Hospital of Greater Bakersfield.


She is survived by her husband of 44 years Charles of Bodfish; son James Bailey of Mesa, Arizona; daughters Charlene Baldwin of Arizona, Cheryl Edzel of Buena Park; seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren; one sister Doris Hartman who resides in Oceanside. Loretta was a resident of the Kern Valley for the past ten years.
