Ernest Scarlet


Ernest Lawrence Scarlet of Bodfish passed away Oct. 26 at the Lakeview Guest Home in Wofford Heights.


He is survived by his wife, Emma of Bodfish; daughters Carma Kammerman of Santa Ana, Doris Greenwood of Alhambra, Irene Zeman of Diamond Bar; son Donald Scarlet of Alhambra, 14 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.


Ernest Scarlet had followed Lifetime career as a brewery worker employed by many of the famous brewing companies, Including Anheiser.Bush Hamms, Beingold and Schlitz.


Born April 21, 1909 in Park City. Utah, Ernest Lawrence Scarlet was 79.


Interment of cremated remains at the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


Ruth Hanson Dalao


Ruth Hanson Dalao of Kernville was born Sept. 11, 1917 in Concord, Nebraska and died Oct. 17 in Bakersfield. She was 71 years old.


She Is survived by her son John Dalao of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters Mrs. Kenneth Johnson of Wofford Heights and Dorothy Killion Alexander of Nebraska.

Richard A. Stinson


At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral services for Richard Arlow Stinson, 55, who died in Bakersfield after a short illness. Private cremation will be held at the Mish Funeral Home crematory.


Richard Stinson was born in Long Beach on March 18, 1933. He was a graduate of Paramont High School. He was a production manager for seven years and was employed by Cerritos Water Department. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served with the U.S. Army. He was president of the Kern Valley Radio Amateur Club and a member of Lake Isabella Order of Eagles 3156 and Loyal Order of Moose no. 498.


He Is survived by his wife Doris of Onyx; son Ricky Stinson and Lisa Stinson, both of Lake Elsinore and Linda Brown of Germany; brothers Kenneth Stinsson of Modesto and sister Jean Herron of Norwalk; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.


CHARLES "DUSTY" WILLIAMS


Charles Dusty Williams, of


Lake Isabella, died Oct. 24 at the age of 76.


Mr. Williams was a retired fireman, printer and musician. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; father Roger Williams of Sparks, Nevada; Barbara Brown of Fresno and Linda Brown of Long Beach, six grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 29 at the Moose Lodge in Lake Isabella.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Kern


Valley cemetery commital chapel for Mable Texie Marsh of Kernville. Officiating was Pastor Wayne Beebe of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church of Lake Isabella.


Mabel was born March 16, 1910 in Tomball, Texas and died Nov. 5 in Mt. Mesa. She was 78 years old .


She is survived by her husband of 57 years David Marsh of Kernville; brother Alvin Lambert of Ohio; sister Gladys Kels of Ohio, Evelyn Oyler of Ohio. She was preceeded in death by her son Blaine David Marsh in April 1949. Mabel was a 15 year old resident of the Kern Valley.


JEANNE M. WAGGONER


A funeral service was held Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Jeanne Mary Waggoner of Bodfish. Officiating was Jim Ash. Jeanne was born March 2, 1922 in Ohio and died Nov. 6 in Bakersfield; she was 66. She is survived by her husband of 39 years Harold Waggoner of Bodfish; son Bruce Lee Waggoner; daughter Heather Lin Waggoner of Bodfish; brother Richard Van Pelt of Florida; sister Betty Hagerty. Interment was at Glen Haven Memorial Park in San Fernando. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Naomi was born Jan. 14, 1920 in Belton, Texas and died Nov. 4, 1988 in Mt. Mesa and was 68 years old.

A memorial was held in Santa Maria for Augustus Watson Richards of Santa Maria. Mr. Richards was born Oct. 12, 1915 and died in Mt. Mesa on Nov. 7, 1988. He was 73 years old. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

Howard Lorenz of Bodfish passed away Nov. 8. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Margaret of Bodfish; daughters Sandra Holbrook of Shadow Hills, Pam Kliedon of Lake Isabella; brother Herbert Lorenz of California; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Lorenz was a resident of the Kern Valley for the past seven years. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the VFW, Pearl Harbor Survivors, Masons, Shrine and Scottish Rite Bodies. Born July 21, 1917 in Nebraska, Howard Arthur Lorenz was 71.

JOSEPH IVAN NILSON


Graveside services were held in Greenlawn Memorial Park on Nov. 10 for Joseph Ivan Nilson, 24, who passed away in Bakersfield. Pastor David M. Snow and Lt. Gregory Horn, Chaplain U.S.N.R. officiated. Also a memorial service was held at First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella on Nov. 12, Pastor David Snow officiated.


Mr. Nilson was born March 22, 1964 in Bakersfield and resided in Lake Isabella all of his life. He was a boat- swain mate in the U.S. Navy for five years.


Survivors include his wife, Kelley, of Bakersfield; son Matthew Joseph Nilson of Bakersfield; parents Dr. Lynn and Noreen Nilson of Lake Isabella; brother Fred Nilson of Bakersfield; grandmother Marian Nilson of 29 Palms; grandparents Bud and Agnes Remback of Lake Isabella; aunt Peggy Reider of Ridgecrest; cousin Kim Griffith of Ridgecrest; cousin John McNally III of Lancaster; aunt Judy Beaumont of Bend, Oregon; cousin Greg

OBITUARY


Houston D. (Tex) Oliver


Graveside services will be held today, Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Houston Denham (Tex) Oliver, a well known Kem River Valley resident and business owner for over 25 years who died of cancer in Newport, North Carolina on Aug. 26. He was 80.


After serving in the Army during World War II, Mr. Oliver was a tool designer in the Los Angeles area. He married Sylvia Nettles in 1949.


The Olivers moved to Onyx in July, 1967 and became the proprietors of the Ranch House Cafe. Mr. Oliver retired when the cafe burned down in 1969. Some of the cafe property was developed into a subdivision known as the Ranch House Estates. Mr. Oliver lived in the estates, on Oliver Lane, until 1984, when he moved to Newport, North Carolina.


Mr. Oliver remained active in his retirement, writing two novels. He wrote one about his years in Texas, and the other about the Kern River Valley which he loved.


Mr. Oliver leaves his wife, Sylvia Cecile Oliver of Newport, North Carolina, and a son, Everette Houston Oliver II of Columbia, Maryland.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Valley


Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Clifford Mooney of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Ben Grant.


Mr. Mooney passed away Nov. 16 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife Eldora; sons Cliff Mooney of Plummer, Idaho, Don Mooney of White Bear Lake, MI. Michael Mooney of Sparks, Nevada and Clarence Fetty of Richmond, VA; daughters Cheryl Grant of Simi Valley and Diana Knowles of Newhall; 12 grandsons and 6 granddaughters and seven great- grandchildren.


Mr. Mooney was born in Edmond, OK. on June 14, 1913 and was retired from Alexander's Markets in 1975. He was 75 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.

A funeral service was conducted graveside at Kern Valley Cemetery for George W. Wison, 69 of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. John Carpenter, Pastor of the Church of the Nazarene.


Mr. Wilson passed away Nov. 15 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Ann of Wofford Heights; son Bill Wilson of Fresno; sons George also of Fresno and David of Kernville; brothers Clarence of Bakersfield, Ernest of Tollhouse and Ralph of New York; sisters Ruby Glass of Watts Valley, Ula Lucky of Fresno, Velma Vance of Fresno and six grandchildren. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Elks and a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 31 years. Mr. Wilson was a Veteran of both WWII and Korea. Interment at the Kern Valley cemetery. Douglas E. Bevan


A memorial service was conducted Friday, Nov. 18 at the United Methodist Church in Kernville for Douglas E. Bevan of Kernville. Officiating was Rev. James S. McGhee, Pastor.


Mr. Bevan passed away Nov. 14, the victim of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 178 in the Kern Canyon.


He is survived by his wife, Janet of Kernville; son Douglas Eric of Kernville; daughter Laura of Kernville; parents Richard and Joann Bevan of Riverside; brother Thomas of Riverside and sister Cynthia Davis of Magalia, CA.


Born July 5, 1965 in Texas, Douglas Eric Bevan was 33.

A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Rose Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Whitier on Friday, Nov. 18 for Adam Ennis "Tex" Sofres of Kernville. Officiating was Bruce Rokus of the Church of Christ in Whittier. Mr. Scifres passed away Nov. 13 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his son Vern of La Puente and preceded in death by his wife, Dorcas. Tex was a member of the Elks and was retired from the Standard Oil Co.


Born July 19, 1911 in Texas, Adam Ennis Scifres was 77.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Nov. 19 graveside at the Kern Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Kenneth "Max" Tiedje of Riverkern.


Officiating was Rev. James McGhee, Pastor of the United Methodist Church, Kernville. Mr. Tiedje passed away Nov. 14 at home. He was a motion picture special effects for 20 years. Born May 25, 1928 in Newton, Iowa, Kenneth "Max" Tiedje was 60. Interment at the Kern River Valley Mortuary .


DONALD B. KENDALL


Donald B. Kendall, a 12 year resident of Kernville, passed away Nov. 16, 1988. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, he was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and a former senior electrical engineer at Toledo Scale Co. in Toledo, Ohio for 42 years. Mr. Kendall was an ardent birdwatcher and long time member of Toledo Naturalist Association. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Harriet of Kernville; son Col. Don Kendall of Bonn, Germany; daughter Marcia Boardman and grandson Todd of San Diego; two brothers and one sister. Respecting the deceased's request, the burial will be private.

Mrs. Gray passed away Nov. 10 at the Kaiser Medical Center in San Mateo. She Is survived by her husband of 52 years Herbert W. Gray; son Herbert Gray, Jr. of Nevada; daughter Carol Foster of Pacifica; sister Margaret Rutledge of Idaho; three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.


Mrs. Gray was a resident of the Kern Valley for the past six years. Born Nov. 23, 1909 in Glendale, CA, Ruth Elizabeth Gray was 78.

A graveside funeral service was conducted Monday, Nov. 14 at the Kern Valley Cemetery for Robert Hipple of Kernville. Officiating was Thomas Groover. Mr. Hipple passed away in West Hills, on Nov. 11. He is preceded in death by his wife Winona deceased in 1983 and survived by his daughters Dorothy Watkins of West Hills, Jeanette Mccluskey of Wofford Heights, Alice Vance of West Hills, Eyvonne Harlow of Woodland Hills, Ruth Groover of Kernville; son Richard Hipple of Colorado Springs; nine grandchildren and 11 great· grandchildren.

Lula Coffeen Dahmer


Lula Coffeen Dahmer, a resi- dent of Lake Isabella, passed away Nov. 10. Born in Rutland, New York, she graduated from high school at Adams Center, New York.


Lula moved to California in 1962 and worked for Hughes Air- craft in Culver City, where she then retired.


She is survived by her husband Clifford Dahmer, of Lake Isabella; son Michael Grimshaw of Syracrus, New York; daughter Linda Brown of Culver City; five grandchildren, Randy, Chris and Sara of New York; Paige and Robert of Culver City; and Robert of Culver City.


Orphadell L. Harkness


Orphadell Lucile Harkness of Lakeland Tract in Lake Isabella passed away Nov. 23 at the Hilltop Convalescent Hospital in Bakersfield.


She is survived by her husband Leo of Lake Isabella; daughter Donna Nine of Lake Isabella; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.


Mrs. Harkeness was a member of the Women of the Moose and a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 20 years.


Born Aug. 16, 1912 in Jasper, Iowa, Orphadell Lucile Harness was 76.

George Chesnut


A graveside service was held Friday, Nov. 25 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield for George Chesnut of Lake Isabella.


Mr. Chesnut was born Aug. 23, 1906 in Texas and passed away at Memorial Hospital on Nov. 23. He was a 15 year resident of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife Ione of Lake Isabella and one son of Bakersfield; 2 sisters and one brother and one granddaughter.


Emeline "Em" Scott


Emeline "Em" Scott passed away Nov. 30 at age 90, after a long illness.


She was a former resident of Wofford Heights and a charter member of the Ken Valley Art Association.


She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, John Scott and four children: Evelyn, Dick, Lola and Dorothy.


Surviving are her sons, Jack of Wofford Heights, Phil of Smith River, CA and daughter Pat of Arizona, 19 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great-grand children.

Mary Lindsay


A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Dec. 10 at Kern Valley Mortuary for Mary Checketts Lindsay of Bodfish. Officiating was Bishop Dennis Hinkey of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Mt. Mesa. A prayer was also delivered by Rev. Jerry Ruff, pastor of the Foursquare Gospel church. Mrs. Lindsay passed away Dec. 6 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield.


She is survived by her husband of 17 years, De Ray Lindsay of Bodfish; sons Charles of Huntington Beach; Steve of Lake Isabella; brother Mark Checketts of Idaho; sisters Beth Graves of California; Cleo Udy of Utah, Lola Weinreich of Wisconsin, Beryl Eshom of California and two grandchildren. Mary Lindsay had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past eight years.


Born Sept. 7, 1922 in Province, Utah, Mary Checketts Lindsay was 66.

A funeral service was conducted graveside Friday, Dec. 9 at Kern Valley Cemetery for Marie Anita Mayfield of Weldon. Officiating was Rev. James S. McGhee, Pastor of the United Methodist Church. Mrs. Mayfield passed away Dec. 5 at San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakersfield.


She is survived by her husband of 25 years Oneal Mayfield of Weldon; sons Stephen of Onyx, John of Crescent City ; daughter Jane Whitengale of Crescent City; brothers Don and Mike Hamlin both of Oregon and eight grandchildren. Marie Mayfield was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 8 years.


RUFUS E. BAREITHER


Rufus Bareither, a former resident of Kernville died Nov. 20 in Exeter. In 1967 he and several other Lutherans were instrumental in star- ting the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Bertha; daughter Arleen Rum- mel of Sacramento; grandson Rolf Strassheim of Sacramento and three sisters.


He was born in Twin Bridges, MO on July 14, 1916 and was 72. Funeral services were held at Trini- ty Lutheran Church in Exeter on Nov. 23.

Philip Giesen


A mass of Chistian burial was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 10 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic church for Philip M. "Phil" Giesen of Wolford Heights. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. A.G. Herdegen, pastor of the St. Jude Parish. Mr. Glesen passed away Dec. 8 at a Los Angeles area hospital.


Mr. Giesen is survived by his wife of nine years, Louise of Wofford Heights; daughters Barbara Carter of Onyx, Dorothy Turko of La Crescenta, Mary Ann De Labio of Torrance, Phylis Barley of Washington; brothers George and Fred both of Texas; sisters Frances Ogle, Mildred Conroy and Mary Louise Marek all of Texas; 11 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.


Phil Glesen was a 15 year resident of the Kern Valley and member of the Knights of Columbus and the Van Guards. He was a founding member of "Our Lady of the Lake" chapter 2972 of the Knights of Columbus In the Kern Valley. He retired from American Airlines where he served for 42 years as stores manager.


Bom Aug. 5, 1909 in Dallas, Texas, Phillip Max Giesen was 79. Interment at Kern Valley Cemetery. Ar- rangements by Valley Mortuary.

ESTHER EMMA PASCOE


Interment of cremated remains at the Kern Valley Cemetery was held for Esther Emma (Trunick) Pascoe who passed away Dec. 3 in Big Bear City, San Bernardino County. Esther was born in Pennsylvania Jan. 12, 1890 and came to the Kern Valley in the early 1920's to become a school teacher for the Bodfish and Patterson schools as well as substitute for other area schools. She married Aubory Pascoe on Dec. 23, 1923. He preceded he in death in 1959.


She was also employed as the cook at the Onyx Ranch where her husband and sons were also employed. In later life she was a homemaker. Esther and Aubory had three children; Everett Pascoe of Granada Hills, Faye Barnes of Big Bear City and Dwight Pascoe of Bodfish; a brother Harry Trunick of Tarzana; sister Myrtle Parker of Pittsburg; 5 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


She was an active member of the Worldwide Church of God and had many friends in the Kern Valley, She was 98 years of age.

Alvin Emil Piazza


Longtime Kern Valley resident Alvin Piazza passed away Nov. 29 in Los Angeles.


Al, as he was known to family and friends was born in Hillsbourough, Illinois in 1918 and came to California as a soldier. Hle gained recognition in the Army as a boxer, winning many titles for his division.


Hle was married in 1942 in Santa Barbara lo Aileen.


After many years of hunting and fishing trips to the Kern Valley, he and Aileen moved here 35 years ago and established the Pine Cone Inn, one of the first businesses in the newly relocated town of Kernville.


His life's work was the restaurant, which he built with his heart and hands. His touch was in everything he created there and he was proud of tus accomplishments at the Pine Cone. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and customers and had a kind word for everyone


Hle was a devoted husband, father and provider.


Al is survived by Alleen, bis wife of 16 years; daughters Dolorw ned Roberta; brothers Clifford of Redding, Elmer and Elmont of San Diego, Ateli of St. Louis and sister Loretta MeNichols of San Diego.


Graveside services were held Dec. 2 at Kem Valley comelery with rulogy delivered by his daughters. Ile was 70

OBITUARY


Mabel Lee Quibell


A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern River Valley cemetery for Mabel Lee Quibell of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Wayne Beebe, pastor of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.


Mrs. Quibell passed away Dec. 13 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


She is surviveed by her sister Edith Guthrie of Southlake, and niece Shirley Longworth of Wofford Heights. Mabel has been a resident of the valley for 18 years.


Born July 23, 1910 in West Virginia, Mabel Lee Quibell was 78.

Leslie Lee Gaskell


Leslie Lee Gaskell of Lake Isabella passed away Doc. 12 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 62 years Johanna of Lake Isabella; sons Richard of Running Springs, Leslie of Las Vegas; daughter Barbara Saylor of Longmont; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.


Leslie Gaskell served with the U.S. Army during the 1920's and was a resident of the Kern Valley for the past 27 years.


Born Oct. 17, 1905 in Illinois, Leslie Lee Gaskell was 83.

Charles W. Motte, Jr.


A memorial service was conducted Dec. 14 at the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church for Charles Motta Jr. of Weldon. Mr. Motte passed away Dec. 11 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of ten years Peggy of Weldon; son Steve of Ridgecrest; brother Freddie of South Carolina; sister Beth Faye Altman of South Carolina; mother Eunice Lackey of South Carolina.


Charles Motte was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who served during the Vietnam war. He was a resident of the Kern Valley for seven years.


Born May 17, 1939 in South Carolina, Charles Wilkins Motte, Jr. was 49.

OBITUARY


LOU ELLEN SHERWOOD


A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 20 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church for Lou Ellen Sherwood of Lake Isabella. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish. Mrs. Sherwood passed away Dec. 17 at the Ridgecrest Community Hospital.


She is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence deceased in 1982. She is survived by her sister Lily May Holmes of Ridgecres; son Richard and daughter in law Kay of San Diego; daughter Evelyn Lanza of Lake Isabella; step-daughter Geraldine Johnson of Placentia; nieces Norma Cor- ral and Dawn Holmes of Ridgecrest; grandchildren Mike Lanza of Lake Isabella; David and Tim Lanza of Ornage County ; Theresa Kaus of Bakersfield and nine other grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Lou came to California in 1941 and has been a resident of the Kern Valley since 1956. She was a member of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church and the Kaph Chapter of the Order of Golden Slipper. Born Dec. 17, 1900 in Sweet- water, Texas, Lou Ellen Sher- wood was 88. Interment at the Kern Valley Cemetery. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary.
