Graveside services were held Monday, April 27 at the All Souls


Cemetery in Long Beach for Charles L. Gerry of Wofford Heights, formerly of Compton who passed away April 22 in the Cottage Hospital of Santa Barbara, following a brief illness.


He is survived by his wife, Wanda Gerry of Wofford Heights; son, Charles Gerry, of Boise, Idaho; step son Reese Dovidio of Cerritos; daughters Jan Paul of Fresno and Paula Keller of Boise, Idaho; brothers Bud Gerry of Quincy, Massachusetts and Jim Gerry also of Quincy; sister Madeline Matteson of Massachusetts and eight grand children.


A Mass was said in memory of Mr. Gerry at the St. Jude's Catholic church in Wofford heights. Mr. Gerry was a resident of Wofford Heights for seven years. He lived and worked in the Long Beach/Compton area from 1948 to 1980, then retired after working as a plumber for over 32 years. He worked in the Long Beach area and was a member of the Southern California Pipe Trade Union. He was a WWII Army vet and served in Europe. He was a long time member and past Exalted Ruler of the Compton Elks Lodge.


Born April 29, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts, Charles L. Gerry was 69.

CAROL B. HEFFNER


A funeral service was conducted Monday, May 4 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella for Carol Heffner of Southlake. Officiating was Rev. James Lee, Pastor of the Valley Falth Center, Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Heffner passed away April 27, the victim of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 178 in the Kern River Canyon.


She is survived by her husband of 33 years, David L. Heffner of Southlake; son and daughter in law Mike and Velma Heffner of Southlake; son Russell Heffner of Southlake; daughter Julie Mohrhauser of Pt. Hueneme; granddaughters Christina Mohrhauser and Jacquelyn Heffner; one brother Cletus Gerig of San Diego County; sisters Evelyn Klaus of Corona, Karen Schaeffer of Inglewood and sister Dolores residing in Ohio.


Carol Heffner was a member of the Kern Valley Historical Society, past president of the Friends of the Library, a member of the Nature Conservancy, Kern Valley Wildlife Association and the Death Valley 49ers.


Born June 5, 1834 in Indiana, Carol Bernice Heffner was 52. Internment

A graveside funeral service was conducted Saturday, May 2 at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Cecelia Grant of Wofford Heights.


Officiating was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church.


Mrs. Grant passed away April 30 at the Arvin Care Center, Arvin. She is survived by her daughter Julie C. Johnson of Irvine.


Born May 4, 1912 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Cecelia Grant was 74.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday, April 29 at the United Methodist Church of Kernville for Simeon C. Barnes of Kernville,


Officiating was Pastor James S. McGhee.


Mr. Barnes passed away April 27 at the Memorial Hospital of Greater Bakersfield


He is survived by his wife of 57 years Oleta of Kernville; son and daughter un law Donald and Barbara of Bodfish; brothers Tom Barnes of Yucca Valley, Harold Barnes of Kernville and four grandsons.


Simeon Barnes was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland.


He served on the Kern Valley Hospital Board, was a Past Commander of VFW Post 7865, was a Noble Grand of the Oddfellows Lodge, a charter member of the KRV Masonic Lodge, Past President of the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, was former operator of Kernville Ilardware and Manager of Valley Manufactured Ilomes.


Simeon Barnes had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 35 years. Born July 22, 1906 in Trout River, Newfoundland, Canada, Simeon Chesley Barnes was 81.

View Southern Baptist Church, Lake Isabella. Lanita passed away May 2 at her residence after illness.


She is preceded in death by her mother Juanita Kent deceased Jan. 6, 1986 and survived by her father Lawrence Kent and one cousin Bobby Jean Sugg of Kentucky.

A funeral service was conducted graveside at the Kern River Valley cemetery for Martha V. Warburton of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Joel Astor of the Valley Mortuary statt, Mrs. Warburton passed away May 1 at the Hilltop Convalescent Hospital, Bakersfield.


She is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Warburton and survived by her daughter Ella Blaise of Wofford Heights; sister in law Maxine Hughes of Lake Isabella; grandchildren Bonnie Mellenger of Van Nuys, Cheryl Hicks of Phoenix, Arizona, Barbara Hydman of Burbank, Kenny Plaise of Wofford Heights; great grandchildren Cindy and Lisa Hydman and Mike McGlothlin; great-great grandson Daron McGlothlin.

Mrs. Kidder passed away May 8 at home after illness. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Duane F. Bucky Kidder of Southlake; daughter and son -in-law Janice and Ken Homer of Redondo Beach, son and daughter in law Robert and Vivian Kidder of Simi Valley; daughter Joanne Bergstrom of Lake Isabella; grandchildren Karen and David Homer, Stacey Kidder and Ron Griffin.

Born June 20, 1915 in Wilsona, Los Angeles County, California, Aven Gardner Edwards was 71.

Mrs. Tagami passed away May 9 at the Kem Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Shigeo of Mt. Mesa; sister Agnes Kanow of Los Angeles; nephew Genicht Kanow of Alhamba and granddaughter Mikl Dinning of Rolling Hills.

She is survived by her son Norman of Southlake; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Carlton Clayton Ayers, 76 passed away May 13 in Northridge, California.


A resident of Bodfish, Mr. Ayers is survived by his wife, Kitty; sons Leland of Burbank, Jack of Woodland Hills, Greg of Ben Lomond; daughters Nancy Brown of Sylmar, Diana Sutton of Wofford Heights, Lorrie Lee of Reseda; brother Bob Hayes of Pasadena, Tommy Ayers of Burbank; 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.


A member of Sidewalk C.B. club and Mountain C.B. club, Mr. Ayers was known as Tumbleweed. Ile was a prize winning jelly maker and avid fisherman.


Graveside services were held Saturday, May 18 al Kernville cemetery. Valley Funeral Home, Burbank was in charge of arrangements.

CARRIE WATKINS


A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 11 in Nacadoches, Texas for Carrie Belle Watkins of Wofford Heights. Mrs. Watkins passed away June 6 at home in Wofford Heights.


She is survived by her daughter Ruby Nell Lankford of Torrance; daughter Faye Morrow of Houston, Texas; son lienry Jay Watkins of Nacadoches, Texas; grandchildren Deborah Lankford of Wofford Heights; Steven Lankford of Redondo Beach and grandchildren in Texas. Carrie Is also survived by great- grandchildren Carrie Lankford and Danielle Lankford, both of Wofford Heights and great-grandchildren in Texas.


During the depression era, Carrie Belle Watkins was widowed and raised three children in Texas while supporting her family as a farmer. She came to California In the 1960's and worked as a nurses alde in Culver City Hospital and helped to raise her great-grandchild Carrie.


Born Jan. 6, 1902 in Nacadoches, Texas, Carrie Belle Watkins was 85. Interment at the Cold Springs Cemetery, Garrison, Texas. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


PATRICIA WOODS


Patricia Woods of Lake Isabella passed away May 22. She is survived by her husband Doyle of Lake Isabella; sons Terry, Melvin and David Herdliska; daughters Linda and Tracey Herdliska, all of North Hollywood; 11 grandchildren; brother William Carter of England and sister Maureen Walker of Scotland.


Patricia Woods had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past five years.


Born May 2, 1930 in England, Patricia Ann Woods was 57.

FLOYD M. KEITH


Floyd Michael Keith of Wofford Heights passed away at the Sepulveda Veterans Hospital on the May 23,


He was known to his many friends as Stub and served his country In World War II in the 573rd Signal Corp. Airborn Division.


He is survived by his wife, Pearl of Wofford Heights; daughter Gloria Blessing of Mariposa; one grandson, Dennis of Mariposa; three brothers, Harry of Anzia, Raymond of Palmdale and Cecil of Orange City, Iowa and one dater, Opal Clopton of Jefferson, Iowa.


A memorial service was held at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights on May 30.


Mr. Keith was born at Marathon, Iowa on Sept. 21, 1922. He was 64 years old.


Private burial was held at the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles.


JOHN A. GANNON


John A. Gannon, 44, Nyssa, died Saturday, May 23 in a Boise hospital of natural causes. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Bridget's with Father Michael Miles of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Vale, Oregon.


Mr. Gannon was born Oct. 16, 1912 at Bakersfield, where he was raised and graduated. He graduated from Bakersfield Jr. college and attended and graduated for Idaho State University with a degree in pharmacy.


Survivors include his wife, a son, Jon Gannon of Bolse; two daughters, Julie and Janelle Gannon, both of Bolse; his father, Harold Gannon of Bakersfield; his mother, Mildred Gibson of Kernville; brother Bill Gannon of Santa Rosa; and two sisters Dorothy Strecker of Bishop and Alice Kuehl thau of Omaha, Neb. A sister, Pauline Gannon died earlier.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday, June 3 at the Foursquare Church In Wofford Heights for Sandy Forsythe of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Jerry Ruff, pastor. Mrs. Forsythe passed away May 31 at home after illness.


She is preceded in death by her mother Helen Marle Pruitt deceased in 1971 and survived by her husband of 15 years, Robert Forsythe, Jr. of Lake Isabella, father George Pruitt of Northern California, daughter Amanda, Brandy and Angle all of Lake Isabella; brothers Charles Pruitt of Lake Isabella, Robert Pruitt of Bakersfield; Tony Pruitt of Northern California; sister Nancy Ramirez of Lake Isabella; niece Sandy Ramirez of Lake Isabella; nephews Daniel and Christopher Ramirez of Lake Isabella.

She is survived by her friend Socorro Lem of Los Angeles.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, June 6 at the Eagles Lodge in Mt. Mesa for Fernand "Fern" Vachon of Wofford Heights. Officiating were officers of Kern Valley Eagles Lodge Aerle 3156.


Mr. Vachon passed away June 3 at the Sherman Oaks Community Ilospital in Sherman Oaks.


He is survived by his wife Arline of Wofford Heights; daughter Michelle of Sherman Oaks.


Born Dec. 13, 1926 in Lewiston, Maine, Fern Vachon was 60.

OPAL L. DRAKE


Interment was held at the Kern Valley Cemetery for Opal L. Drake, who passed away May 22 at a hospital in Santa Cruz, following a short illness.


She is survived by her son Jerry Drake of Las Vegas; four daughters, Judith Drake of Aptos, Donna Drake of Aptos, Dian Drake of San Gabriel and Sharon Drake of La Selva Beach and one sister, Irene Clark of Terra Bella.


Mrs. Drake was a member of the Women of the Northern Star and the Cosmetology Association. A native of Oregon, Opal L. Drake was 65.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday, May 23 at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church, Wofford Heights for Violet J. "VI" Goergen of Wofford Heights. Celebrant of the mass and officiant at the Rosary recited Tuesday evening was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish.


Mrs. Goergen passed away May 22 at the San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakersfield.


She is survived by her husband of 36 years Anthony Goergen of Wofford Heights; sisters Lillian Houchin of Wofford Heights, Frances Papp of Michigan; grandson Jeffrey Kober of Mt. Mesa; great grandson Corey Nabonne of Gardena.


Vi Goergen was a member of the St. Jude Altar Society. Born July 17, 1917 in Denora, Pennsylvania, Violet Julie Goergen was 69.

Mildred M. Badgley of Lake


Isabella passed away June 9 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


She is survived by her husband Dale of Lake Isabella; son Dick Walter of California and three grandchildren.


Mildred Badgley had been a resident of the Kern Valley for the past ten years. Born Oct. 29, 1914 in Nokay Lake,


Minnesota, Mildred Marie Badgley was 72.

A memorial service was conducted Monday June 15 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel Lake Isabella for Harvey F. Jones of Bodfish. Officiating were officers of Kem River Valley Moose Lodge No 498 Loyal Order of Moose and officers of KRV Elks Lodge No 2358 Benevolent Protectorate of Elks. Mr. Jones passed away June 13 at the Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa.


He is survived by his wife of 46 years Fern of Bodfish; sisters in law Betty Patton of Glendale, Margaret Wachultka of Iowa, Arlene Ferguson of Iowa.


Harvey Jones was a member of the Elks, Moose and Eagles and was a resident of the Kern River Valley since 1962. During WWII Iiarvey Jones served with the U.S. Navy.

A mass for the repose of the soul of Lynne Marie Balz was celebrated at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church Wofford Heights on Thursday, June 11. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish.


Mrs. Baiz passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital on June 9. She is survived by her husband Basilio of Wofford Heights; daughters Annie Marle Kreidel of Las Vegas, Marie Chaves of Las Vegas, brother and sister in law Malcolm and Norma Knowles of Santa Cruz; sisters Emma of New Mexico and Nancy of Michigan; stepchildren Elleen Balz of El Monte, Raymond Baiz of La Puente, David Baiz of West Covina and Angell Baiz of Tuscon, Arizona and 15 grandchildren.


Born April 15, 1937 in Muskegon, Michigan, Lynne Marie Balz was 50.

Joseph Anderson passed away Sunday, May 24.

Joseph Anderson was a member of the operating engineers for 46 years, retiring in 1971 and moved to Bodfish. He was a active member of the Kern Valley Historical Society.

Francis Schmid of Southlake passed away June 13 at the Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathryn of Southlake; sisters Eileen Logsdon of Illinois, Algreda Randall of Illinois, nephew Robert Carlton of Southlake, niece Catherine Coutrer of Longview. Mr. Schmid was a member of the VFW and the Moose. During WWII he served with the U. S. Army in combat in Normandy, NorthernFrance the Ardennes and the Rhineland. CLIFF HEWITT


Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 23 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield for Cliff Hewitt who died June 19.


Born Jan. 13, 1911, Mr. Hewitt has been a prominent citizen of the Kern Valley and Kern County for more than three decades, during which time he rendered distinguished ser- vice through active participation in civil affairs and his dedication to the highest standards of conduct in all his private and public activities.


He is survived by his wife, Esther of Lake Isabella; sons Clifford Jr. and Robert and his grandchildren Carla, Kelly, William, Chad and Shannon.


During his life, Mr. Hewitt was recognized by many citizens and government for his contributions to daily lives. Ile was a member of Kern Valley Exchange Club, Elks and Moose for more than 40 years. His civic activities included meritorious services as a director of the Kem County Board of Trade (1970-1977) and he served as president in 1971-72. He continued to maintain his dedicated interest in the economic development of Kern County by providing valuable guidance to business, industry and government through his leadership in organizing a countywide Industrial Development Program, promoting development of the county's tourism and visitor industry out of The Business Outlook Conference.


Among is many other activities, he organized the Kern Valley Exchange Club in 1959, served as district governor and state convention chairman for the National and State Exchange Clubs, served on the board of the Bakersfield Exchange Club, Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce, Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce, Kern River Valley Visitor's Council, and a trustee on the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation.


During his life, he had been honored with "Outstanding Citizen" awards and honors by the Kern Valley Exchange Club, Kern River Valley Board of Realtors, Ridgecrest City Council and the Kernville Chamber of Commerce.


In 1977, in recognition of his long and outstanding service and contributions to Kern County, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution honoring and recognizing Cliff Hewitt for his devotion.

OBITUARY


GLENN O. MC CLATCHEY


A graveside funeral service was conducted Friday, June 19 at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Gien Mc Clatchey of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Jerry Corbaley, Pastor of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church. Mr. Mc Clatchey passed away June 15 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is preceded in death by his wife, Sur deceased in August of 1988 and survived by his daughters Perrine Hunsinger of Oregon, Pauline Douglas of Lake Isabella, Joanne Day of Simi Valley; son Glenn Mc Clatchey, Jr. of Oklahoma and daughter Jackie Pettit of Bellflower. Glenn has 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Born Jan. 29, 1916 in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, Glenn Otto Mc Clatchey was 71.


FLORENCE H. FRANKLIN


Florence H. Franklin of Lake Isabella passed away June 21 in Santa Paula.


Mrs. Franklin is preceeded in death by husband John Franklin deceased in 1978 and survived by her son Kenneth of Ventura; daughter LaVerne Adames of Lake Isabella; four grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

ROBERT L. HARRY


At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral services for Robert L. Harry of Bodfish, who died June 6, 1987.


His ashes will be scattered at sea, near those of his beloved wife, Charlotte.


He is survived by brothers, sisters and a granddaughter in Pennsylvania and two step-children, Mary Lou Smith of Texas and John French of Connecticut.

HERBERT H. HARTMAN


Herbert Hartman of Southlake passed away June 18 at home.


He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marjorie of Lake Isabella; son Stuart of Camarillo, son Dana of Arcadia; sister Helen Stowell of Nebraska; brother Frank of England; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Mr. Hartman was a member of the Moose and resident of the Kern Valley for the past four years.


Born March 6, 1909 in South Dakota, Herbert Harold Hartman was 78.

OBITUARY


JOHN B. QUINN


A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the St. Jude Parish Catholic Church for John B. Quinn of Lake Isabella. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, Pastor of St. Jude Parish. A rosary was recited before mass and at the Valley Mortuary Chapel, Mr. Quinn passed away June 19 at home after illness.
