in this state : both in point of magnitude and power, as a monopoly affecting the interests of all classes. Monopolists are odious to an American public ; and our citizens seldom discriminate in their denunciation-classing all as alike in- jorious to the common weal ; but the philosophical observer of passing events, and careful thinker upon questions of polit- ical economy, is not carried away by popular catcb-words, or deafened by noisy clamor ; and while he freely admits the correctness of a general doctrine, can discover where its application admits of important modifications. We contend, and we think we have shown, that the establishment of this company, and its absorption of the steamboat property of California, was a great public benefit. The first number of this daily was issued on the 21st of No- vember, 1853. It was commenced by un association of gen- tlemen, and was published by them in the name of Frank Soule & Co., who, nutil a late date, presided over its edito- rial department. Under Mlr. Soule's charge, it was con- ducted as an independent journal upon all subjects ; and, owing to the great care nsed in the character of miscellane- ous reading matter as well as the high standard of its edito- rial articles, it at once procured a large circulation, and was esteemed a worthy journal for the family circle. After the nomination of Col. Fremont for the Presidency, Mr. Newell became sole proprietor-Mr. Soule resigning his position. It is now conducted as a political jourun), devoted to the prin- ciples of the Republican party.

Shepard, Frank Baker, E. C. Mc- Comb. J. B. Roberts, H. C. Beales and J. D. Thornton.
The following sketch of the organization and establishment of the above church is from the pen of one of the members of the first Board of Trustees :- In the years 1853 and 1854 the number of families having increased in the city, and having begun to regard this country as their home. it was thonght the time had arrived for erecting n large church edifice in a central location-furnishing it in ns comfortable and at- tractive a manner as practicable-and for procuring a preacher who, by his ability and reputation, would induce young men, strangers and our citizens generally, to attend upon public worship with greater regularity. For this pur- pose, a letter was addressed to the Rev. W. A. Scott, D. D., then settled in New Orleans, requesting him to remove to this city, to aid in the formation of'n new church and to be- come its pastor. Dr. Scott arrived in San Francisco on the 19th of May, 1854, and commenced bis labora in Musical Hall, Bosh street, on the Sunday following. Afterward, by
polite invitation of the officers of the Unitarian Church on Stockton street, (their pustor being absent,) he preached in that church.
On the 17th of July, 1854, a society was formed, adopting tha name and title of the "Calvary Presbyterian Church and Congregation of San Francisco," to be connected with the "old school " Presbyterian General Assembly of the United States. A constitution was adopted, and in accordance therewith, C. K. Garrison, James R. Roberts, J. Carothers, E. W. Taylor, Thos. H. Selby, John Middleton, H. C. Beales, Henry M. Hale and Lucius Bell, were chosen as a Board of Trustees. A Building Committee, consisting of Messrs. J. B. Roberts, H. M. Hale, John Middleton, H. C. Beals and L. Bell, was also appointed, and on the 9th of Angust, 1854, one-half of a 50-vara lot on Bush Street was purchased for the sum of $20,000, cash. On the 25th of the same month proposals from H. C. Brown were accepted to build a church on said lot, in accordance with a plan fur- nished by L. R. Townsend. The building was finished in December following, and is in size-front 60 feet, depth 100 feet, hight of the side walls from the surface of the ground 45 feet ; with a foundation of seven feet in depth. Style of architecture. Ionic Italian Corinthian. The pews in the main floor are arranged As arcs of circles having the pulpit for their center, which is placed in an arched recess. From the recess there is communication with a two-story building in the rear of the church, used as a study and library room by the pastor. The galleries are on each side and end, having well cushioned seats which are kept entirely free. The main floor with the galleries will conveniently seat from 1,000 to 1,200 persons. The gallery at the end is used by the choir. In the rear of this gallery is a large well arrang- ed recess, in which to place a fine organ. There is now in the choir gallery a small orgau of two stops, which was de- signed to be used temporarily until means could be furnished to procure one snitable to the church. The basement of the building is set apart in divisions, and used as Lecture, Sub- bath School and Library rooms, conveniently arranged and neatly furnished. The entire cost of the lot and improve- ments has been abont $70,000. On account of great re- verses, many citizens who would have contributed largely, became unable to assist, materially, in prosecuting this enterprise, and as a consequence a heavy debt was left upon the church. A mortgage, the only debt now remaining, will expire on the 1st of Jannary, 1857, at which time also a number of responsible notes will become due which have been given to meet the mortgage in full. The annual ex- penses of the church are abont $13,000, which amount is amply provided for by the rent of the pews on the main floor of the church and the ordinary Sunday collections.
