This boat was built at Pittsburg, taken to pieces and shipped with machinery, furniture and apparel complete, to this country, where, in the fall of 1851, she was set up at Sacra- mento, at the mouth of the American River. Dimensions : length, 119 feet ; beam, 2424 feet ; hold, 574 feet ; capacity, about 200 tuns. She was constructed originally for the Marysville trade, by Capt. Frisbie. In March, 1854, she became the property of her present owners.

The Vulcan Iron Works were established in August, 1851, by Gordon & Steen, for the manufacture of steam engines and machinery. In January, 1855, they were converted into a joint stock incorporated company, the proprietors being Geo. Gordon, E. T. Steen, Paul Torqnet, Sami'] Aiken and Charles R. Steiger, the foreman of the varions departments, who had been with the concern from its commencement. These works have turned ont about 120 engines and 225 boilers, with the machinery of upwards of 130 saw, flonr and quartz mills, candle and starch factories, etc. All the hydraulic machinery for raising brick buildings in San Francisco, were invented and made at these works. The amount of wages paid to workmen, including amonnts withdrawn hy the proprietors, since the commencement in 1851, have been $336,000. The number of hands employed varies from forty-five to ninety. The business donc averages $170,000 per annum.
