Mr. W emigrated to California from Texas ; arrived in April, 1849; resided at Sacramento City nntil beginning of the year 1851, wben be removed to ('rescent City. In June of that year was elected County Judge of Klamath County for


tbe regular term of four years ; but, after serving one year, resigned, mocb to the regret of the people. Subsequently removed to San Francisco, and, for several years, transact- ed astock and money brokerage. In September, 1855, Mr. Woods was elected County Treasurer of S. F. County, and, by the consolidation bill, confirmed in his present position. The son of an old Kentucky physician. (Dr. John H. Wooos,) Mr. W. was educated at St. Joseph's College, and took the degree of M. D. Afterwards was attached to the U. S. A. as Assistant Surgeon. Possessing all the winning frankness of minner for wbieb Kentockians are distinguished, Mr. W. has made hosts of friends wherever be bas resided, whom his generosity has firmly attached.

Established as a weekly, Jan. 4, 1849 : changed to a semi- weekly, Dec. 10, 1849 ; and to a daily, Jan. 20, 1850. The original proprietors of the " Alta " were, E. Gilbert, E. C. Kemble, R. C. Moore and J. B. Omisten. After numerous changes this, the oldest paper in California, has become the property of an association of practical printers, with Mr. Moore, one of its original owners, at their head, and now enjoys a very large and rapidly increasing circulation. Issued semi-daily, weekly and semi-monthly : a mammoth sheet in size and conducted with marked nhility.

On the 3d day of October, 1856, this line was fully completed to this city and the first message transmitted through direct to Sacramento, From that city this company at an early day penetrated the interior, and now by a net-work of tele- graphic line connected San Francisco with all the chief mining towns. The line from Sacramento crosses the river at that place to Washington, thence to Bepecia, where it crosses the Straits to Martinez; thence to Oakland, and thence across the Bay to this city. American Theater, cor Sansome and Halleck


This fine edifice was erected towards the close of the year 1854, at a cost of $60,000, and opened under the management of J. I Neafie, Esq. Dimensions 44 by 40 feet on Sansome, then 54 by 120. At the sale of the Folsom estate this prop- erty was purchased by Loyd Tevis, Esq., for $30,100.
