Mr. S. arrived in California May 29, 1849. In Sept. 1850, WAS associated in the editorial department of the "Alta California." Was elected a Senator from this county to the State Legislatore, Sept. 1851. Established the "Daily Chronicle," Nov. 21, 1853. In Sept. 1854, was elected School Commissioner as successor to Judge P. A. Morse. Mr. S. has been distinguished in this State as a prominent politician and political writer of the whig party, bot char- acterized by a degree of personal jodependeoce for which politicions of no school are remarkable ; as ao instance of which we may mention the production of a letter at the whig state convention of 1854, which had appeared in the Alta. where Mr. S. was a prominent candidate for a congressional nomination with every prospect of success, wherein the ad- ministration of Mr. Fillmore was rather severely comment- ed on. The authorship of this letter Mr. S. promptly and ingenuously avowed, and thereby effectually defeated his nomination. The ' Chronicle,' established onder bis auspices ns An independent daily, soon took rank as a first class news- paper, and, distinguished for the pority of its columns, and excellence of its literary department, obtained an extensive circulation io the domestic circle. South Park, bounded by Second, Third, Bryant and Brannan
This improvement was projected by Mr. George Gordon, in 1852. The design embraces the block af six 100-vara lots (abont twelve acres) bounded by Second, Third, Bryant and Brannan S reets, forming the only level spot of equal area, free from sand, within the city limits. A public garden, 75 feet wide and 550 feet long, is laid out down the center of the block, and surrounded by an ornamental iroo railing, around which run avenues, 40 feet wide, opening on to Sec- ond and Third Streets hy avenues 75 feet wide. Building lots, 68 in number, are laid out around the avenues. The Trust Deed of this property. framed after that of Gramercy Park in New York, prohibits the erection of buildings other thao brick or stone. One-fourth of the lots-being a quarter-section of the improvement-were built upon by Mr. Gordon in 1854, forming a symmetrical and noiform frontage of 440 feet, divided into 17 buildings. The cost of this block of buildings was $110,000. From the basemeot of each lot clay was taken sufficient to make bricks for the houses erected thereon. Water is obtained at a depth of 25 feet. The general situation of Sooth Park is one of great beauty and salubrity. Omoibus lines run to it every teo minutes. The building provisions give almost perfect seco- rity against fire. The remainder of the onimproved lots are still in the bands of the original projector. When the design is carried out, the tout ensemble will be highly im- posing and worthy of the oldest city in the Unico.
