The persevering enterprise of this gentleman and the rela- tion of his efforts with the carly progress of the city, are en- titled to notice.

Mr. M. arrived here in September, 1849. Soon afterwards lie became proprietor of the Parker House, nnd after the May fire of 1850 erected on its site the Parker House, and first Jenny Lind Theater. The Theater was leased by James Stark, Esq., who, for twelve months, consecutively, paid a nightly rent of $175. In 1851 these premises were ngain de- stroyed in the great conflagration of that year, and again their energetic owner erected the Hotel und Theater, still again doomed to utter destruction in 1852, when Mr. Mn- guire determined to build a permanent structure that should be fire proof. Aided by the sale of a portion of the ground, And the immense rental in prospect, with an unlimited cre- dit, he built the Jenny Lind Theater, at u cost, ludependent

of the ground, of S160,000. The subsequent history of this edifice and its conversion into the City Hall, are well known to all. The outlay of Mr. M. in improvements, du- ring his residence in San Francisco, will not vary much from a half million of dollars, Notwithstanding losses and embarrassments of the most discouraging character, the business tact and energy of Mr. M. has never forsaken him, and he has evolved success when utter prostration appear- ed inevitable.

The immense success which has attended the Minstrel Con- certs has induced Mr. M. to build, and he has now under contract a new San Francisco Hall. to be erected on the present site, 50 by 150 feet, with an elevation ol' 50 feet, and which, when completed according to the plans, will be one of the most beautiful edifices of the kind in the United States.
