These Mills were established by the present owners, in May, 1854, and have the following capacity, viz : five circolar saws, from twelve to thirty inches in diameter, capable of entting 10.000 feet of lumber per day ; two planing ma- chines, which work an equal amount of material ; together with one turning lathe, -all in most complete order, and driven by steam. Connected with the Mills is A Box Manufactory, wbich, in point of extent, exceeds that of any otber in the State, and is the pioneer stenm box manufac- tory in the city. Messrs. Hobbs, Gilmore & Co. bave, by assidnous application to business, arisen from moderate manufacturers to being the proprietors of the most exten- sive establishment of the kind in San Francisco.

This establishment is owned by an incorporated company, consisting of New York and San Francisco merchants. The building is 75 feet in front by 122 feet in depth, and, ioclud- ing the basement, 5 stories in hight. The capacity of the works is equal to the manufacture of 400 tons of refined sagar and 20,000 gallons of syrup per month. On the prem-
ises are a Steam-power Cooperage Shop, 20 feet wide by 100 feet in depth, for the manufacture of cags and barrels ; a Bone Black Manufactory ; and 2 Artesian Wells, wbicb discharge 70.000 gallons of water per day, 5 feet above the surface of the ground. The neighboring markets of the Sandwich Islands, Manila, Batavia and China, furnish sup- plies of raw sugar.
