OBITUARY

William Walker

By Ardis Walker

William D. Walker passed away in the Bakersfield Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 29 after a long illness. He was born in Kernville on August 17, 1898, the son of William Brannon Walker, Jr., and Etta Mae Bole Walker, who were natives of Kernville. His grandfather, William Brannon Walker, Sr., had crossed the plains from Texas during the gold rush, moved with his family from the Mother Lode to Keysville, then on to Kernville, when the mines of those camps had created a sizeable stampede to the Kern River diggings.

The deceased spent most of his life in the Kern River country and in the region of Glennville and White River, where he absorbed the culture of a frontier society which he retained until his last day.

His early formal education consis- ted of the bare rudiments of reading, writing and simple figuring. But, throughout his youth and manhood, he amassed a huge store of skills and learning in the world of nature; skills which are disappearing in a modern technological age.

In his youth, he was trained in prospecting the hills of the Kern by his miner father and in the arts of hunting and tracking, which were handed down to him though his father as an heirloom which had its origin in Indian neighbors and friends.

He leaves three daughters, Lillian Moore and Vivian Miller of Woody. June Price of Kernville, and a son, Robert Bob Walker of Bakersfield. His descendants include 15 grand- children and 7 great-grandchildren He also leaves a brother, Ardis Watker of Kernville.

In accordance with his expressed wishes, there will be no funeral services and his ashes will be deposited on the Moore Ranch near Woody where he spent his last years.
