Her husband, Monroe Bechtel, drove a truck for his cousin, Jim Bechtel, hauling in supplies for Jim's first store in old Kernville, from Bakersfield over the old Caliente Road. Later they opened their own grocery store in old Isa- bella. They leased the old Palmer Ranch where they grew alfalfa hay on land that had previously been used only for grazing cattle. Those invited to their ranch home for dinner will never forget the fried chicken, fresh garden vegetables, home canned goods and homemade ice cream.
As years passed, Edna moved to old Kernville where she made her home for many years. Though Edna was a small, frail-looking person, she kept busy raising flowers and taking care of a vegetable garden, crocheting and embroidering for the Methodist Church bazaars, cleaning the school house, selling tickets at the picture show, and always helping friends and neighbors.
Edna made the move to the new Kernville In 1951 and lived for a few years in the house now occupied by her granddaughter, Donna Petersen and her husband, on Big Blue Road. She moved to Morro Bay where she spent the next 22 yeras, the last few in the Huntington Rest Home when her health failed.

OBITUARY
A Kern River Valley pioneer, Orian Franklin Campbell died December 9 following a three-year illness. He was 71 years old. Orian lived in the Kern River Valley 35 years. Over 150 friends and relatives attended his funeral services on December 11 at
Orian Campbell
the United Methodist Church in Kern- ville.
Those attending Orian's funeral paid him tribute and remembered.
There is much about this remark- able man to recall.
Orian Canıpbell arrived in the Kern River Valley in 1941. He saw a beautiful valley with a great potential for development. At that time, the Kern River Valley was a small rural community, sparsely populated and short of services.
The new arrival purchased the telephone company in old Kernville and set about the task of upgrading and expanding the primitive service. Orlan later sold his first purchase to Don Golden and it was a going business ...... customers doubled and telephone lines were strung from poles instead of fence posts.
Orlan Campbell then began a list of "firsts" in the Kern River Valley. He built and / or developed the first laundry, trash pickup service, lumber yard, sporting goods store, appliance store, locker plant, ice cream and snack shop and was the first to irrigate farm land with a drilled well and electric pump sprinkler system.
Understandably, Orian often ran into local opposition along the way.
The community often resisted change. Orlan viewed change as progress and acted accordingly.
There were three words Orian would not tolerate in his vocabulary: never, can't and impossible. During his active business years, Orlan had many occasions to ponder the lack of these three words. And so did many of his constituents.
If a development project aeemed unlikely ...... most likely Orian Camp- bell was right in the middle of it.
When old Kernville gave way to Lake Isabella, Orian turned his ambitions toward developing new Kernville. Once again he racked up a list of "firsts."
He built Ewings-on-the-Kern, Whis- pering Pines Lodge, McCambridge Lodge, and the first commercial building in new Kernville, which now houses a cafe and antique shop. Many other buildinga in Kernville are atill in use that Orian built, including the lumber yard which he operated for years.
Orian drilled many water wells in Kernville. All too many were expen- sive and dry ...... but he kept drilling. He entered some business ventures that proved unprofitable personally but never to a partner or investor.
Orian became a one-man employ- ment agency. Many of his myriad business associates occasionally found themselves with a "new employee" at the behest of Orian's urgent prodding. Frequently, Orlan created jobs to help a floundering man and often he was forced to borrow money from the bank to pay a man for a "created" job. Orlan soon developed a widespread reputation for his ability to provide a job for anyone willing to work.
In 1957, Orian Campbell moved to the South Fork area and again be- came a community developer. He built the Onyx Emporlum, developed the town, maintained and operated the water company and donated the ground for Scodie Park which he also helped develop. Orian maintained the Scodie Park grounds for years on a voluntary basis. He kept up the Onyx streets the same way.
The water company served the Onyx residents for a most nominal fee. Not because Orian was opposed to profit, but because he felt the area needed "greening up." The best way to "green up" is to "plant and water." He encouraged Onyx residents to "plant and water." They did and Orian's low cost water supply was most instrumental in a successful, if
During Orian's old Kernville days, churches and preachers were difficult to finance and hard to come by. The intrepid developer had a unique system of "helping" a church fatten its coffers. Orian, on a first-name basis with everyone, developed the disconcerting, but successful, habit of surprising Saturday night revelers by dropping into bars and asking the partying ones for church donations.
Among friends, Orian was called "the Preacher Mover." Orian cheer- fully, and at no cost, moved many preachers in (and out) of the Kern River Valley.
Three years ago, illness forced Orlan Campbell to curtail and finally, to cease his seemingly never-ending activities. Fraternally, Orlan was active in the Elks Club, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and the Weldon Methodist Church. He was also a member of the old Kernville school board.
Orian Campbell is survived by his wite, Gladys; daughter and son-in-law Helen and Timothy Witt, all of Onyx; one brother, Otis, Balboa Island; two grandsons, Stephen and Stuart Witt and one great-grandson.

OBITUARY
Murray Knight
Services were held Tuesday, De- cember 28, at Chapel of the Chimes, Inglewood Park Cemetery, for long- time Kernville resident, Murray Knight, who died at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Tor- rance December 22.
Murray Hood Knight was born August 6, 1905 in Springtown, Texas.
He left the Los Angeles area in 1942 for old Kernville where he joined the fire department. Eventually he be- came captain, a rank he held until hia retirement.
When Isabella Dam was built, Murray and his wife joined three other couplea, forming the Kernville Development Company. With Murray as president, they bought acreage five miles upstream and built a new town which they named Kernville with the permission of the United States Post- master General.
When the Kernville Development Company was only a few weeks old, one couple withdrew from the organi- zation. Another moved from the area, becoming a "silent partner." The third couple was elderly and soon died, leaving Murray to manage the affairs of the company almost single- handed.
Among other things, he bullt and operated the first motel in Kernville. Upon his recommendation, the Kernville Development Company donated lots to the Methodist Church, fire department, the International Order of Oddfellowa, in addition to acreage for two parks.
Murray held membership in the Kernville branches of the Methodist Church, the International Order of Oddfellows, golf course committee and was a charter member of the chamber of commerce.
He is survived by his widow, Zora. Donations may be made in his name to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 North West Ninth Avenue, Miami, Florida, 33136.
